You may recall the many generations of BMW 3 Series Coupe, but nowadays it goes under the 4 Series moniker. This current 4 Series is a little bigger than its predecessor and the 4 Series Convertible utilises a folding metal roof. One further addition to the 4 Series range is a coupe-based fi ve-door hatchback called the 4 Series Gran Coupe. This sleek car ranks as one of the most attractive in the company’s range, especially in M Sport guise. It exhibits sportier handling than a regular 3 Series saloon too. All 4 Series body styles can be had with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive transmission, but only with certain engines. Topping off the 4 Series range is the phenomenal M4 in both Coupe and Convertible body styles. Its turbocharged six-cylinder engine delivers prodigious levels power to the rear wheels and can be had with a manual transmission if you’re really committed.
BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo
Off ering the space of the 7 Series with a semi-elevated driving position, the 5 Series Gran Turismo has a certain appeal, albeit a limited one. Controversial looks aside, the 5 GT is an excellent car to travel around in, thanks to its spacious cabin and comfortable suspension set-up. Despite its substantial size, it handles well on more challenging roads. Due to BMW mainly off ering larger petrol and diesel engines, the 5 Series Gran Turismo won’t suit many Irish budgets, but if the prospect of a large SUV doesn’t interest you this could be a left-fi eld alternative.

If you relish the prospect of wafting along in a large leather-lined grand tourer then the 6 Series Coupe, or indeed Convertible for the extroverts out there, will absolutely have your attention. Its long bonnet and gently sloped roofl ine make for some classic proportions, but be under no illusion: this coupe has plenty of technology on-board. While the lure of a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine may be strong, it is the 3.0-litre diesel in the 640d that impresses in terms of performance and running costs. But if it is ultimate performance that you’re chasing then the M6 with its 560hp 4.4-litre V8 will certainly keep you entertained.

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe
Easily one of the best looking cars that BMW currently produces, the 6 Series Gran Coupe wraps ‘4+1’ seating into a shape that will turn heads at every corner. We reckon it’s more stylish than its two-door coupe sibling, and BMW prices both models identically, meaning you simply have to decide on how many doors you want. While the 6 Series Gran Coupe does look its best in the performance-orientated M Sport trim grade, the bigger wheels do make the ride quality less comfortable, so choosing your exact build specifi cation is essential. The range-topping M6 is simply sublime to drive with astonishing performance, though in reality the 640d off ers virtually all the performance most drivers will ever want.
