Hyundai ix20
We’ve always thought the ix20 was a bit of an oddball in the Hyundai line-up, and its name doesn’t help. Despite the ‘x’, this is no SUV; instead, it’s a compact fi ve-seat MPV that has a small footprint for easy manoeuvring and parking around town, yet decent interior space to accommodate up to fi ve people. A design refresh for 2017 keeps it looking modern, though it’s likely to remain a relatively rare niche option, as hinted at by the availability of a single trim level. Engine options include 1.4-litre diesel or petrol and a much less effi cient 1.6-litre petrol alternative with an automatic transmission. Pricing is similar to that of the Hyundai i30, which is a far nicer car, if a little less practical.

Hyundai Ioniq
The Ioniq is a radical new departure for Hyundai. It’s a brand new vehicle, developed from the ground up to off er three distinct powertrains. The fi rst two are already available in Ireland and they take the form of the all-electric Ioniq Electric and the petrol- electric Ioniq Hybrid. Thanks to grants, the Electric is considerably cheaper to buy and it emits no pollutants, though of course it
has a more limited range (Hyundai quotes up to 280 kilometres). Both cars are incredibly modern inside and out, with a beautifully fi nished interior that is also spacious and distinctly well-equipped. Items like heated seating and touchscreen satnav are standard, for example. A third variant, using plug-in hybrid technology to off er the best of both worlds will come on stream later this year.
