The Q2 is the newest crossover from Audi and also its smallest to date – though only just. Slotting in under the Q3 in the line-up, this new fi ve-seat SUV gets much funkier styling and comes in a variety of vibrant colours. It may not have huge amounts of space for rear passengers, especially taller ones, but the boot is big at 405 litres. Arguably the most impressive feat that Audi has pulled off with the Q2 is just how well it drives. Many crossovers focus more on functionality of the interior and often forget about how it should feel from behind the wheel, but Audi has clearly paid close attention to this and the results are impressive. Its 1.0-litre petrol engine suits the car very well and has no issues with regard to performance. If you’re regularly doing longer journeys then the 1.6-litre diesel may be a better bet for its lower fuel consumption.

Blending both sporty looks and practical cabin features the Audi Q3 has enjoyed a good degree of success in Ireland’s premium compact SUV segment, despite some equally impressive competition. It is beginning to show its age now, and while Audi has added new exterior styling kits, it is on the inside that the Q3 looks most dated. Standard equipment levels are on par for the segment, but, if you want to have a really top notch Q3, then you will have to pay for it, and it can quickly get expensive. At the lower end of the model range, there is little diff erence in price between the 1.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines, which makes the decision more about personal preference. With its fuel-saving ‘cylinder-on-demand’ technology, we think the petrol is a better choice for most drivers.

For 2017 Audi has an all-new Q5, even though it might not look it at fi rst. Yes, the styling is quite similar at fi rst glance to its predecessor’s, but look a little closer and you’ll see that this is subtly diff erent in every way. It’s bigger too, and inside is a cabin that you won’t want to get out of. From the materials used to the weighting of the buttons, Audi has set the standard for interior quality in the segment. Of course, cars like this must also be practical, and Audi has done lots to deliver on that. Passenger room and boot space have increased while new tech features such as Audi’s cool ‘Virtual Cockpit’ (a 12.3-inch digital dashboard) ensure that the Q5 feels right up to date.

Sharp lines and a modern design best sum up the Audi Q7, the company’s fl agship SUV. Audi has turned the Q7 into a vehicle that can whisk you, and up to six others, from point A to point B in quiet and comfortable refi nement. And even on 21-inch wheels, the ride quality is good. While there is the option of a 3.0-litre petrol engine, it is the 3.0-litre diesels that will be the most popular choices and they better suit the Q7. Their ample power, however, pales into insignifi cance when compared to the highly tuned SQ7. That’s powered by a 4.0-litre diesel V8 producing 435hp. Alternatively, there’s a plug-in hybrid version called the Q7 e-tron. Combining a 3.0-litre V6 diesel with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack, it produces 373hp while returning an offi cial 166mpg and 46g/km. On battery power alone it can travel up to 56km.
