Fiat is fi ghting back to regain ground lost to other mainstream brands in recent years as it fl oundered with an aging model range without many competitive off erings. Its evergreen 500 models prop things up, but the arrival of the Tipo should change its fortunes – and there’s more to come.

Fiat 500 This year (2017), Fiat celebrates the 60th anniversary of the original 500 model, a vehicle that the current car takes a lot of design infl uence from. That retro style is so important to the car’s success that Fiat hasn’t altered it drastically in the 10 years it has been in production. A minor update in 2016 resulted in tweaks to the lights and interior, plus the addition of a more modern infotainment system. makes it awkward for adults to use them, so best to think of that space as more luggage room, as the boot itself is tiny. Still, it’s a feel-good car that’s ideally suited to urban living. That makes the presence of a coarse 1.3-litre diesel engine on the price list a little puzzling. Stick with the 1.2-litre petrol option instead. Trim levels are Pop, Lounge and the sporty looking S, while those that like the wind in their hair can choose the stylish 500C with its full length and width retracting fabric roof.

Fiat Panda

A mild update for 2017 hasn’t altered the core attributes of the Fiat Panda, which we’re happy about. It’s a cheap and cheerful small fi ve- door hatchback that seems to punch above its weight on the road. It’s brimming with something you can’t measure - Italian character. Sure, the interior is a bit hard and scratchy, sure, it’s a little loud and unrefi ned, but even so, you can’t help but like the Panda. The 4x4 and Cross versions are particularly loud and uncouth with their 1.3-litre diesel engines, but they can get places most 4x4s can’t thanks to their low weight and compact size. Shame they’re so expensive though.

Fiat 500L
The Fiat 500 has been so successful for the Italian company that it has spun several separate vehicle lines off the brand. The 500L was the fi rst, but while this larger car shares the general design concept of the regular Fiat 500, it has more in common with the platform of the Fiat Grande Punto. Buyers choose between the regular 500L, the more rugged looking 500L Trekking and the seven-seat 500L MPW. The latter looks awkward, but they all have decent enough interiors with loads of headroom in particular. The Trekking is the most impressive, but expensive. Engine options range from a slow 1.4-litre petrol to the economical 1.3- and 1.6-litre diesels. The latter are the best fi t and can also be paired with an automatic transmission.
