luggage capacity have the option of the neatly-styled and fl exible estate. Decent levels of standard equipment and competitive pricing sweeten the deal, there are four-wheel drive options and even a hybrid, while the range is topped by the incredible AMG C 63 S version, which, thanks to a biturbo 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, turns the sober-suited, sensible saloon and estate into a supercar chasing monster.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe/ Cabriolet


Taking a good portion of the C-Class saloon’s rationality and adding some glamorous frivolity, the C-Class Coupe and Cabriolet lose two doors, add sleeker looks and, in the case of the Cabriolet, drop the top to the elements. The Coupe does without that, and is the slightly sharper driving proposition as a result, but you’ll not be disappointed in either behind the wheel. The common interior is neatly functional and appealing to look at, too. Both might be a little less practical, but they possess passable rear seats, which are useful on the odd occasion you might need them. The engine line-up is largely shared with the C-Class saloon, too, so you can have anything from the C 220 d diesel or C 180 petrol, right up to the AMGs in either fast C 43 guise (with four-wheel drive) or turned-up-to-eleven with the C 63 S. We’d love the latter, but the reality is the C 220 d in either is all you could ever need.


Mercedes-Benz CLA/ CLA Shooting Brake


The CLA is a ‘four-door coupe’ according to Mercedes-Benz, and while we’re not about to argue with its rakish good looks, a coupe it’s not, particularly as it’s off ered in Shooting Brake (estate) form, too. Like a coupe, though, the CLA is more about style than practicality, even in that Shooting Brake, but then there’s some joy to its frivolity, and it’s diffi cult not to be drawn by its smart looks. The interior betrays its origins, though, as the CLA is little more than a saloon version of the A-Class in reality. Though that’s not to say you’ll feel short-changed inside, the cabin detailing, materials and design all shouting premium specifi cation. The drive doesn’t quite live up to the looks though, as the CLA is a bit unsettled on the road due to fi rm suspension, and while it steers accurately enough it’s never exactly what you’d describe as brimming with driver appeal. That’s even true of the AMG model, which gains four-wheel drive and a lot of power.
