OUR PICK OF THE RANGE i40 Executive
Hyundai i30
RChoiceecommended Editor’s Hyundai i40
A brand new Hyundai i30 hatchback arrived at the very start of 2017 and it takes a major step forward over its predecessor. The styling is quite subdued, but this fi ve-door hatch is packed full of technology and equipment as standard and comes with the promise of low running costs. On that front, though many will automatically make a beeline for the 1.6-litre diesel model, we’d highly recommend the new turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol option. It’s only a tenner more to tax each year and is smoother and more fun to drive than the diesel. For now, the trim lines are simply Deluxe, which is heaped with equipment by any measure, or the Deluxe Plus, which includes such niceties as part-leather upholstery and climate control. All versions get touchscreen infotainment and LED lights. Expect a new i30 Tourer estate towards the end of 2017.

Curiously, Hyundai fi rst launched the i40 in Ireland as a Tourer estate, and it was an instant hit thanks to its large and comfortable interior, stylish design, strong warranty package and effi cient 1.7-litre diesel engine. None of that has changed in the interim, though there have been a few tweaks to the car recently that bring the appearance up to date and keep it all fresh. Naturally, there’s a four-door i40 saloon now as well. There are four trim levels to choose from, though we’d recommend avoiding the basic Comfort specifi cation. The star of the range is the newly introduced Executive level, which includes a fab seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring satnav, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also gets leather upholstery, making the i40 feel like an upmarket luxury car.
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Santa Fe Executive 4WD
Hyundai Santa Fe
The seven-seat Santa Fe SUV has been a long favourite of Irish car buyers - with good reason. For a reasonable outlay, you get a large vehicle that looks of high class on the outside, is very well made inside and can fi t seven people when needs be. Like most cars of this type, the rear-most seats aren’t great for big adults and using those means a tiny boot behind, but still, when you need the extra accommodation, they’re invaluable. While the Santa Fe is well-priced and well-equipped, its 2.2-litre diesel engine has relatively high emissions, and it’s much more expensive to tax as an automatic, so bear that in mind. There are front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options too and we’d highly recommend the latter.
