OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Passat 2.0 TDI DSG Highline Business Edition
Volkswagen Passat
Since its arrival in this current iteration, the Passat has been the standard against which all other mainstream saloons have been judged. Sharp looks with clean, creased bodywork lines give the Passat a purposeful appearance. Add to that the option of the sportier R-Line specifi cation, as well as the possibility of an estate version – including the more rugged Passat Alltrack. In terms of model choice there is no shortage of options, with two Business Editions adding

yet more choice to both Comfortline and Highline variants. It is largely a diesel line-up consisting of 1.6- and 2.0-litre TDI engines, with manual and automatic transmissions available. You can, however, also have a 1.4-litre TSI petrol model, which isn’t bad, or you can go down the plug-in hybrid route with the Passat GTE. This PHEV uses a petrol engine and battery pack to off er fuel consumption as low as 1.7 litres/100km according to offi cial fi gures.
Volkswagen Beetle Volkswagen Golf SV
Although it bears the Golf name, the SV bridges the gap between the regular Golf and the Touran MPV. Its higher roofl ine and larger proportions all round give it extra room inside without deviating too much from the hatchback’s template. While there is still only room for fi ve passengers, boot space increases to 590 litres, ideal for buggies and sports equipment. Mechanically it shares much with the regular Volkswagen Golf, so dynamic aspects such as comfort and refi nement rank high among its competitors. Engine choices include a 1.2-litre TSI petrol unit in two power outputs, and two 1.6-litre TDI diesels, with the range topped off by a 2.0-litre TDI. As with other Volkswagens there are three distinct specifi cation grades to choose from.
106 Auto Ireland Guide to New Cars 2017 AUTO IRELAND AND HARMONIA ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY VARIATIONS.
Few names in the automotive world are as well-known or loved as the Volkswagen Beetle. In many ways the car that helped create Volkswagen’s popularity, the Beetle we have in 2017 is a far cry from that fi rst version. The styling, though, remains as iconic as ever. Inside, the Beetle isn’t quite a spacious as the exterior might fi rst suggest, but it is well put together with a layout that is similar to other Volkswagen models. In fact, it’s so familiar that it doesn’t feel all that special. If you don’t cover great distances on your commute, we’d recommend the 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine, but naturally, more fuel effi cient diesel engines are available.
