Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The CLS might be based on the underpinnings of the previous generation E-Class, but it’s still a hugely desirable car. It introduced us to the idea of a ‘four-door coupe’ and while that’s a debatable description, the CLS is undoubtedly one of Mercedes-Benz’s most glamorous cars. That’s particularly true in its most extreme AMG CLS 63 guise, which adds a rousing soundtrack from a powerful V8 engine to the give the CLS voice as well as looks. It’s expensive though; so too is the CLS 500, so park your CLS beside the black pump and fi ll it with diesel and you’ll not fi nd the CLS 350 d lacking in any way. The Shooting Brake adds even more appeal, if not masses more practicality: the availability of a polished wooden boot fl oor tells you everything you need to know about the CLS - it’s a wonderful indulgence, if you’ve got the means.

Older than the hills it’s designed to conquer, the G-Class is, amazingly, still selling strongly around the world many decades after it was launched. Mercedes-Benz has managed to keep a veneer of modernity by adding technology, but like bolting your iPad to a Chippendale table it’s not really fooling anyone. Still, there’s huge charm in the ancient, boxy old 4x4. The doors close with a nuclear silo like solidity, while solid quality and go- anywhere ability means it’d likely be the only thing running should someone get those launch codes and use them. It’s virtually hand built, which means it’s expensive, madly so, hence it’s an indulgence for the very wealthy. That it’s off ered in not one, but two AMG versions, one, hilariously, powered by a 6.0 biturbo V12 engine with 630hp, rather underlines its super-exclusive status, but there’s a diesel if you must.

LClass Mercedes-Benz GLA
The GLA is the entry-level SUV in the Mercedes family and as the name suggests, it’s essentially a restyled A-Class on raised suspension. There are more rugged-looking wheelarch covers and a few other visual tweaks to mark the GLA out as a soft-roader, and in fairness to Mercedes-Benz it’s not all bad. That higher suspension does mean it’s not quite so rough on poor roads, while speedbumps and high kerbs in town aren’t quite such a hazard. Those wheelarch trims help fend off parking scrapes too, though it’s an SUV for town rather than country use. The GLA makes some sense then, even if it’s not quite as convincing as a BMW X1 or Audi Q2 as a proper small SUV. The engines powering it are all familiar, and the 200 d is more than enough, without the 4Matic four-wheel drive.

It took Mercedes-Benz a while to off er a BMW X3 and Audi Q5 rival, but with the GLC that’s exactly what it’s now got. Actually, it’s got two, Mercedes-Benz off ering the GLC in two diff erent body styles - a conventional SUV and an SUV ‘coupe’, though both have rear doors. A sloping rear roofl ine adds some swoosh to the looks for the GLC Coupe, if removing space from the boot, but as BMW has proved with its X4 and X6 models not all SUV buyers crave, or, indeed, need, practicality. Space inside both is good, though visibility out of the rear suff ers in the Coupe. As with every Mercedes-Benz, choice and personalisation options are extensive, the line-up covering everything from the 220 d turbodiesel to the fast 3.0-litre biturbo V6 in the range-topping Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic. All drive well, with more of an emphasis on comfort than most.
