Many still associate Subaru with world rally, but the truth is that the Japanese car maker focuses more on its no-nonsense four-wheel drive cars these days than it does motorsport and rally replicas. The iconic Impreza name is still going strong, but it’s hardly the most memorable of the company’s creations.

Subaru Forester


Once upon a time, the Subaru Forester was a quirky kind of jacked up estate that took a lot of infl uence from the company’s rally days with turbocharged petrol engines, etc. Things have changed and the Forester is now a relatively conventional large fi ve-seat SUV. It’s not particularly interesting to look at, but it has a great reputation for reliability and ruggedness. On top of that, the interior

and boot are spacious and it’s refi ned on the road. Indeed, in spite of the off -road image, the Forester is a very comfortable motorway car, especially when specifi ed with the diesel engine and automatic transmission. Shame the emissions are so high. There’s even a petrol model that is about the same to tax each year that is worth considering by those that spend most of their time in town.


Subaru XV


The XV was based on the fi ve-door Subaru Impreza when it was launched in 2012 and it does indeed look like a regular hatchback with raised suspension, chunkier wheels and more rugged design details. However, it turns out to be one of the most interesting Subarus currently on sale to drive, as it mixes hot hatch like agility with a little more body lean and the useful four-wheel drive system. Its relatively high emissions rating and the fact that few know what it is mean sales are low, but if you give it a go you’ll be surprised at just how good a car it is. Buyers choose between 2.0-litre petrol or diesel engines and a single well-equipped trim level.

The Subaru Impreza has evolved from rally icon to very sensible, very forgettable fi ve-door family hatchback. It faces an uphill battle for recognition in this part of the world as it competes with such segment leaders as the Opel Astra and Ford Focus and yet it’s not particularly cheap to buy. The Impreza’s single specifi cation is, admittedly, very well equipped, but there’s no diesel engine option, which will undoubtedly limit sales. Instead, Subaru off ers a single, smooth 1.6-litre petrol engine (a fl at-four, which is unique in the class) and all-wheel drive as standard. The result is a relatively refi ned car that’s comfortable to drive and useful when the conditions turn slippery, but of very limited appeal in the Irish market.
