DS DS 3

The DS 3 is the most impressive model the company makes. It’s a three-door hatchback aimed squarely at the MINI with its sporty image, agile chassis and wide array of personalisation options. However, while MINI sticks with a vaguely retro styling theme, the DS 3 has no heritage to draw on, so it’s unique looking and highly modern. An update in 2016 brought the DS 3 further away from its Citroen roots, adopting the now signature DS radiator grille and, on the higher Prestige trim level, high-tech LED headlights. Other than those, the entry- level Elegance specifi cation is all anyone will need, and though the diesel engines are economical and punchy, the petrol options better suit the character of the DS 3.

The DS name started life on an innovative large luxury saloon from Citroen in the 1950s, and while it was applied to the cars featured here under the Citroen banner for a few years it is now marketed as a completely unique brand, targeted at the premium end of the market. It’ll take time before buyers are on board with that, as the current line-up isn’t very diff erent to how they were before the Citroen badges were removed.

DS 4

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE DS 4 Elegance BlueHDi 120 manual

DS now markets the 4 as two separate cars, the DS 4 and the DS 4 Crossback, but the latter is essentially a modifi ed variant of the standard car, with an elevated ride height and chunkier looking body work. Whereas it comes with more equipment, we don’t think it’s really worth the extra outlay. Indeed, while the DS 4 is surprisingly good at cornering, it’s diffi cult to see where it sits in the automotive landscape. It’s priced to compete with the likes of the Mercedes A-Class and Volvo V40, yet it’s not quite as well made and the coupe-like roofl ine seriously undermines rear headroom. On top of that, the rear side windows don’t go down. To call this car ‘quirky’ would be kind.

DS 5

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE DS 5 Prestige BlueHDi 180 auto

The DS 5 gets closer to the concept of the original Citroen DS than any other model in the line-up. It’s good-looking (in an admittedly unique way), has a fantastically design-lead interior and really doesn’t follow the herd. Although the DS 5 takes the form of a fi ve-door hatchback, it competes with luxury saloons and really, you shouldn’t consider one if practicality is on your mind, as it’s not very big inside. You’ll forgive it that for its exquisite detailing, if you’re so inclined. Sadly, that’s not all the DS 5 needs forgiving for. Unlike the original DS, which was engineered for supreme comfort fi rst and foremost, the DS 5 seems set up for assured fast driving, to the detriment of comfort. So, a little more space, a lot more squishiness in the suspension and we’d be looking at something truly special.
