My how Land Rover has changed. It all began with the rough and ready Defender-like utility models and today it’s a purveyor of highly desirable, highly luxurious SUVs across a broad spectrum. Through it all, though, the British brand has managed to maintain an image of adventure and off -road ability. The Range Rover sub-brand represents the more exclusive end of the market, but even that has expanded in recent years.

Much more connectivity and driver assistance systems are being introduced and inside the quality looks to have been improved further. You can even reconfi gure the seating arrangements in the car via a mobile app when it is parked up.


Land Rover Discovery Sport


Although there is no lack of premium mid-size SUVs on the market, not many off er the choice of seating for seven passengers, as the Land Rover Discovery Sport does. We say ‘choice’ as those extra two rear seats remain an optional extra – and a somewhat expensive one at that. In fact, if you get a bit too liberal with the option box ticking the Discovery Sport can soon become a very expensive car. Pricing aside, the Discovery Sport is a hugely capable SUV that is as comfortable tackling a river crossing as it is doing the school run or a long motorway drive. Helping its ergonomic driving position is a clutter- free dashboard, which sees many controls handled by the touchscreen infotainment system. The latest diesel engines have improved fuel economy and emissions, but aren’t the most refi ned on the market.

Range Rover Evoque


OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Evoque 5-Door TD4 Automatic


Since its introduction in 2011, the Range Rover Evoque has sold like hot cakes, and following more recent aesthetic revisions it continues to ooze kerbside appeal. Land Rover off ers the Evoque in three body styles, but the fi ve-door model is by far the most popular among buyers. The three-door coupe model makes access to the rear seats tricky, while the recently introduced two-door convertible will have limited appeal. Along with newer more fuel effi cient engines, the Evoque is available with front- wheel drive. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, but if you can stretch to the nine-speed automatic, it shifts between gears almost seamlessly. However, the latter is only available to order on all- wheel drive variants. Due to the Evoque’s compact dimensions, it is easy to navigate in traffi c and parking is a doddle, even without the optional assistance systems.
