OUR PICK OF THE RANGE There’s only one - Intense 1.6 petrol manual
Mitsubishi Lancer
The Lancer might share some of its DNA with the cars that once dominated world rallying, but Mitsubishi itself admits its focus these days is almost entirely on SUVs and crossovers, so this Lancer is a hangover from the old days. If you can live with the hard-feeling plastics and the somewhat forgettable styling inside and out, the Lancer isn’t without merit, especially in terms of reliability, low pricing and Mitsubishi’s usual good specifi cation and warranty package. Indeed, looked at entirely rationally, the Lancer makes a lot of sense, though it’s a hard-hearted buyer who’ll choose it over any of its newer, more stylish and better to drive rivals. The one engine choice, a 1.6-litre petrol with a fi ve-speed manual gearbox, underlines its age and limited audience, but ignore the competition’s greater sophistication, buy purely on price and warranty off ering (and a need for unremarkable transport) and the Lancer is worth a cursory look, even if it’s diffi cult to really recommend.
Mitsubishi Pajero
Once a genuine Range Rover rival in terms of prestige and ability, the Pajero’s languished relatively undeveloped while its rivals have set off upmarket, with their corresponding increases in pricing. That’s created opportunity, as while the Pajero cannot hope to off er the sophisticated drive of upmarket models today, it retains its size and extraordinary breadth of ability. If you need a genuine workhorse, then it’s well worth consideration, especially since few models have fi lled the gap left by the demise of Land Rover’s Defender and the
Daihatsu Fourtrak. With a huge towing ability, an unbreakable (if far from refi ned) 3.2-litre turbodiesel and the sort of go-anywhere 4x4 ability that rivals tractors, the Pajero’s a working vehicle, with some road car civility thrown in. Mitsubishi has moved with the times, comparatively, by updating the info and entertainment systems to keep it within the bounds of contemporary, but at its heart the Pajero remains an honest, no-nonsense 4x4 for the sort of people who demand their vehicles to do a job.
