Once sitting above its Boxster relation in the price list, the Cayman was repositioned as Porsche’s entry-level sports car when Porsche added the 718 badge to it in the middle of 2016. That realignment has done nothing to dent its huge appeal, and the mid-engined sports coupe is regarded as one of the very fi nest of its type - rightly so. The engines are now four-cylinder and turbocharged, but the strong performance makes up for the loss of soulful sounds, and, in the real world, the greater fl exibility thanks to turbocharging makes it an easier car to live with. And you’ll want to drive it every day, it’s that good. Off ered with two outputs, either 300hp from the 2.0-litre version, or 350hp from the 2.5-litre, the latter, badged S, is the better choice, but you won’t be disappointed by either. Manual cars are the purer, more engaging choices, but the PDK automatic mixes easy town driving with manual override for when you escape the traffi c.

Following Porsche’s usual model designation, the Macan comes in standard Macan, S, S Diesel, GTS and Turbo fl agship guises. All are turbocharged, though and the Macan’s performance is aimed at buyers looking for a compact SUV with a more sporting edge. Distantly related to Audi’s Q5, the Macan delivers a Porsche drive, with an SUV stance. The Turbo and GTS in particular off er huge driver appeal, yet all have genuinely family friendly space and practicality, making it all the Porsche you could ever need. Competing against cars like Audi’s Q5, the BMW X3 and Jaguar F-Pace, the Macan remains very much the driver’s choice, though you pay for it, and the specifi cation isn’t quite as comprehensive as standard as its rivals’. Still, consider it as an alternative to a family car and a sports car and you can easily justify it.

Controversial when it was originally launched, but now an absolute mainstay in the Porsche line-up, the Cayenne takes full-sized SUV driving off road and to the race track. Few rivals can off er the genuine breadth of ability of the Cayenne, even if most never get remotely muddy or scrub the paint of an apex on a race track. The Turbo and Turbo S are in the other-worldly performance sphere with prices to match, though even entry Cayennes with diesel and petrol six-cylinder engines can thrill, too. There’s a hybrid version too, if you want performance mixed with some battery-only running, though the Cayenne S Diesel is a fi ne mix of space, economy and performance, allied to fi ne handling. The best driving full-sized SUV out there, if you want to have fun.
