good on the face of it, but Renault takes the unusual step of then charging monthly rent for its electric car batteries. This may guarantee that you always have the latest tech and a battery in a good condition, but we suspect it puts many off . In a bid to increase appeal, the Zoe this year will be launched with a much improved range - up to 400km apparently.

At fi rst sight, you might not realise that that compact Renault Captur crossover is based on the underpinnings of the little Clio hatchback, but spend any time in it and you soon realise that it’s not what you’d call ‘spacious’. Instead, it appeals with distinctive style and loads of bright colour options. We’re a bit torn on which engine is best-suited to the car. The Captur, while pretty composed on the open road and not at all bad to drive, is at its best in an urban setting, where its compact dimensions and elevated driving position pay dividends. That would suggest that the petrol option is the way to go, but the only petrol engine available is a pretty gutless 900cc unit producing 90hp. The diesel, a 1.5-litre, has the same headline fi gure, but it’s far more impressive without having to thrash it. We particularly love the design elements of the range-topping Captur Signature, but it’s hard to recommend because of a price that pushes it close to that of its big brother, the Kadjar.

It has only been on sale since 2015, but the Renault Kadjar crossover is already a sales success for the French company. That’s hardly surprising when it shares its platform and mechanicals with the Nissan Qashqai, yet adds to it Renault’s value proposition and an arguably more stylish façade. The Kadjar is a fi ve-seat car, but it looks more substantial than that, somehow. There’s a single petrol engined model available, but only in the entry-level Expression+ trim level, so clearly this car is at its best with a diesel engine under the bonnet. Choose between 1.5- and 1.6-litre units (110- or 130hp respectively) - the 1.5 is more effi cient and the 1.6 is quieter, though there are other considerations. For example, the only automatic comes with the 1.5 and the only way to get a four-wheel drive Kadjar is to choose the 1.6.
