The Auto Ireland guide is crammed with new cars you can, for the most part, buy right now, but what about later in the year, and 2018? Our Editor, Shane O’ Donoghue, dusts off his crystal ball
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Alfa Romeo Stelvio – LATE 2017 SUVs are hot property, so it was inevitable that Alfa Romeo would end up making one. The name refers to an exceptional piece of road in the Italian Alps and Alfa has already revealed the highest performance version, using a 503bhp petrol engine that had some Ferrari input. Naturally there will also be more realistic diesel models to come.
Audi A6 – 2018 We’ve not been shown the next generation
Audi A6 yet, but we have been promised that it’ll look sensational and feature cutting edge interior technology, including touchscreens and gesture control. Expect economical
2.0-litre TDI engines, a new e-tron plugin hybrid version and, as ever, an A6 Avant estate and its off -roading alter ego, the A6 allroad quattro. To keep up with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, we presume it will also feature ‘level 2’ driver assistance technology.
BMW X2 – LATE 2017 BMW stole the Paris Motor Show in 2016
with its sporty looking X2 concept car, and followed it up by confi rming that there would be a production version that isn’t too far removed from the show vehicle in terms of style. It will use the mechanicals of the BMW X1 SUV, but a lower, sportier body. Nonetheless, it’s still a fi ve-door car, so it’ll not be totally impractical.
BMW X3 – LATE 2017 Good as it is to drive, there’s no denying that
the BMW X3 SUV is aging quickly, especially compared to shiny new rivals such as the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Jaguar’s F-Pace. No surprise then that’ll we’ll get our fi rst glimpse of the new X3 later this year. Expect it to move further upmarket to create space between it and the X1/X2 below it, while it’s also likely to adopt the co-pilot technology launched recently on the new 5 Series.
BMW X7 – 2018 Although no imagery has been released,
BMW has confi rmed that it is developing a new range-topping SUV, called the X7, to sit above the X5 and X6 in the line-up. It’ll share its platform with the next-generation X5/X6, but feature a larger seven-seat cabin. This model is designed for markets where very large SUVs sell in high numbers, though it will go on sale in Ireland too.
BMW Z5 – 2018 Sports car fans will be eagerly awaiting an all-
BMW X2 concept 4
new two-seat roadster from BMW to replace the pretty, but old-school Z4. It looks like we’ll get the new rear-wheel drive BMW Z5 in 2018, powered by a range of petrol engines. This car has been co-developed by Toyota and though a soft-top version is expected initially, don’t rule out the possibility of a Z5 Coupe further down the tracks. The likelihood of a 450bhp Z5 M is high too.
