Ford Ka+
The smallest car in the Ford range is no longer as small as it once was and therefore gains a ‘plus’ on its name. This all-new model has also ditched the three-door shape in favour of a much more useful fi ve- door body style. At the front is a familiar Ford face, while inside, as well as room for fi ve, the dashboard gets a more modern treatment including clever smartphone integration. Just two versions are off ered, each with a diff erent engine, giving you a choice of either 70hp 1.2-litre petrol with a basic spec (Studio) or a punchier 85hp 1.2-litre petrol with alloy wheels, cruise control, Ford SYNC and air conditioning (Zetec).

Whatever amount of space you think you might need from a seven-seat MPV there’s a high chance that the Ford Galaxy has even more on off er. While it may not have rear sliding doors, it does still present near-van-like levels of interior space, with third-row seating that can easily accommodate adults. Inside, the simple layout of the dashboard and centre console add to the spacious and uncluttered ambience. Most of the engine line-up consists of a 2.0-litre TDCi diesel unit in varying states of performance, and manual as well as automatic transmissions are available, plus an all-wheel drive version.

Ford B-Max

Compact MPVs need to be smart cars if they want to maximise the limited space on off er, and the Ford B-Max makes a solid stab at this. The doors, which open conventionally in the front and slide back in the rear, reveal a pillar-less aperture to the cabin making access incredibly easy. Once inside, however, the interior isn’t the best around due to the large amounts of hard plastics used throughout. Engine choice is limited to a 75hp 1.5-litre TDCi diesel with a manual gearbox and a 106hp 1.6-litre petrol engine with an automatic transmission. Both are good in their own right, but the lower emissions of the diesel, and therefore cheaper motor tax, combined with the lower overall price makes it a straightforward choice.
