OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X5 xDrive30d M Sport


The X5 remains the top SUV in the burgeoning BMW model range. Now well into its third generation, the X5 line-up has also continued to expand with more performance-orientated models by way of the M50d, and X5 M. BMW has also added a plug-in hybrid model to the X5 range, making short trips possible using battery power alone, though we reckon the diesel engine is the best option for this car. As you might expect, inside the X5 comes well appointed, with soft-touch leather and a choice of diff erent material inlays throughout. It is possible to add a third row of seats to make it a seven-seater, but this does make rear passenger space tighter. More aff ordable models include the rear-wheel drive ‘sDrive’ versions, which also have lower motor tax rates.

Although the BMW X6 may seem like a very niche model in Ireland, globally it has sold in respectable numbers - much to the annoyance of the car’s original doubters. Whereas the fi rst generation looked soft, this current X6 looks far more purposeful and has a lot of presence. Once inside, you could be sitting in any large BMW, as the cabin is a familiar aff air. You won’t mind, though, and it is very well fi nished and surprisingly spacious. Most will fi nd the xDrive30d version suffi cient for everyday motoring, but should you want something with more in-your-face performance then there is the X6 M50d, or X6 M. Either will put a rather large grin on your face and a larger dent in your bank balance.
