OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Model X P 90 D
RChoiceecommended Editor’s
Tesla Model X There hasn’t been a cooler, more advanced way of transporting up to seven people since, well, ever. The Tesla Model X is aimed at family users that require the additional versatility of a larger car. It’s MPV meets SUV, coming with fi ve seats as standard, while six- and seven-seat variations are available with an optional third row. Novelty ‘Falcon doors’ feature at the rear, which open upwards, but they still operate even in tight car parking spaces. Boot space is also a massive 2,180 litres in six-seat
confi guration. The Model X features numerous active safety systems, including an innovative medical-grade air fi ltration system that includes a ‘bioweapon defence mode’, though that won’t stop the little ones catching a cold from their classmates in school. All variants feature all-wheel drive, and battery range varies from 417- to 542km. Owners can top up the battery via a home charger, by using the existing public charging networks or by using the soon-to-be-launched Tesla Supercharger network.
Tesla Model S
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Model S P 90 D
RChoiceecommended Editor’s
Size-wise, the Tesla Model S comes in on par with the likes of the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series. Its sleek design makes it aerodynamic, adding to the already impressive electric-only driving range. Even in its most basic ’60’ rear-wheel drive specifi cation, Tesla claims a range of 400km. This increases to 480km with the ’75’ and up to 557km with the additional choice of adding all-wheel drive to both, in what Tesla refers to as ‘D’ for dual motor. At the upper end is the ’90 D’, with a claimed 557km range while the highest specifi cation is the P100 D. This has a 613km range and phenomenal acceleration, giving it the capability to cover 0-100kph in just 2.7 seconds - in almost total silence. Even though it goes much further than most of its rivals between charges, you will need a charging station at home. Tesla will be rolling out its Supercharger network in Ireland at some stage, but home charging gives you added independence. The Model S comes laden with technology, from the massive 17-inch touchscreen and features such as AutoPilot, which brings increasing levels of autonomy to the driving experience. Interior build quality isn’t the same as similarly priced premium rivals, but the Model S does feels unique, with its electric drivetrain more than compensating.
