Toyota
At the tail end of 2016, Toyota Ireland launched its ‘Built for a Better World’ mantra and a major part of that is a focus on hybrid power, which the Japanese company believes is the right technology for today’s motoring. There are still diesel options throughout the Toyota line-up of course, but, for example, its brand new C-HR model will never be fi tted with a diesel engine. It remains to be seen how that will go down with Irish buyers, which have traditionally been very loyal to the Toyota brand.

Toyota C-HR
This is Toyota at its most daring. The C-HR is a highly important car for the company, as it squares up to best-selling crossovers such as the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson. So it would have been forgivable for Toyota to go conservative, but instead it produced an audaciously brave design that stands out as something quite special to look at. That sporty shape disguises the size, though it

also makes the rear seating area a little dark. On paper, the 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain is more effi cient, but it’s also more expensive and less satisfying to drive so we prefer the turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol option. The C-HR turns out to be great fun to drive too, living up to its appearance. Buyers choose from Luna, Luna Sport and Sol trim levels, but all are generously equipped by any measure.

Toyota Aygo
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Aygo x-play+ manual
Toyota’s tiny Aygo hatchback, off ered in three- and fi ve-door formats, was apparently inspired by Japanese Manga cartoons. That explains the highly distinctive X motif defi ning the front. If you don’t like that, the only way to hide it is to choose black paintwork. The more adventurous can go the other way entirely with bright orange or yellow contrasting with the black detailing. Either way, go for the fi ve-door version, as it makes getting into the (cramped) rear a little easier. Best to use the rear seats for luggage/ shopping, actually, as the boot in miniscule. The rest of the cabin is modern enough, if not quite as eye-catching as the exterior, though Toyota includes several items of tech on most versions, including Bluetooth and a reversing camera. Unless you have to have an automatic gearbox, stick with the
fi ve-speed manual and the willing 1.0-litre petrol engine. Best for a life in town too.
Toyota Yaris
Like several Toyota models, the Yaris supermini is a bit of an institution in Ireland with a large and loyal following. Hence it’s second only to the Ford Fiesta in terms of new sales in the segment. Buyers through the years have learned to love its combination of bullet proof reliability, ease of driving and decent interior space. You only need to look around an average city street to realise how many old examples of the Yaris are still in daily use, underscoring the car’s reliability. Stick with the fi ve-door version for practicality and resale reasons and then choose your powertrain depending on your needs. There are modest 1.0- and 1.33-litre petrol engines, a 1.4-litre diesel and even a petrol-electric hybrid option. We reckon the diesel and the hybrids are too expensive for this class, where most drivers cover low annual mileages.
