The BMW X1 used to be the ugly duckling of the BMW X range, but now it has matured into quite a handsome compact SUV. With oversized signature kidney grilles and sharper headlights with LED daytime running lights, the X1 now looks like a proper BMW should. Using the same platform as the 2 Series Active Tourer means that the X1 comes in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive formats. The driving position is higher than before too, giving a better view of the road and making it feel more like a proper SUV, while the 505-litre boot space is equally welcome. For the most enjoyable driving experience, regardless of whether you choose diesel or petrol, ticking the box for the eight-speed automatic transmission is a must.

Between its most recent stylish updates and its gradual increase in size, it is not always easy to diff erentiate the X3 from its larger X5 sibling at fi rst glance. Its appearance is starting to show its age, however, in particular when compared to its direct rivals. Still, the cabin is well fi nished and spacious, and should you opt for higher trim grades, such as xLine or M Sport, there will be little cause for complaint. Other than the entry-level 18d sDrive variant, all X3 models come with all-wheel drive as standard.

The X4 is essentially a scaled down version of the BMW X6 that slots neatly in above the more practically styled X3 to bring a sportier style to the BMW range of SUVs. Emphasising those sporting intentions, the front bumper has large air intakes, while the rear haunches are pronounced. The X4 does off er room for fi ve passengers, but rear head space is a little limited due to a sloping roofl ine. As the design suggests, this is a sporty SUV, a fact backed up by its stiff er suspension that helps to reduce body roll in corners thus enhancing the driving experience for those that relish such things.
