COLD MOUNTAIN (12a); Grand Cinema; May 14th, 15th and 17th; GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING (15); Grand Cinema; May 18th to 20th

BACK by popular demand are two of the films audiences enjoyed at The Grand this year. The first is “Cold Mountain”,

a much-acclaimed American Civil War drama starring Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellwegger. The second film making a welcome return is “Girl

With a Pearl Earring”. Set in 17th century Holland, it tells the imagined story behind one of Johannes Vermeer’s greatest and most enigmatic paintings. Final ly, to keep the youngsters happy, The Grand is showing the new Mike Myers film, “Cat in the Hat”, as its Saturday matinee.

Grease; Blackpool Opera House; May 31st to June 5th

IT needs no introduction - Grease is

the word! Since breaking out on Broadway in

1972, the musical’s place has been firm ly established in the cultural hall of

fame. Jonathan Wilkes stars as Danny

Zuko, the role famously played by John Travolta while Suzanne Carley takes on Olivia Newton John’s Sandy Dumb- rowski. “Grease” has proved that a musical

love story bursting with denim, cheer leaders, slick hairstyles and raging teenage hormones, is timeless. Ticket prices start at £15 and are available by calling 01253 292029.

Moving performance from a first-rate cast

Kindertransport; The Octagon, Bolton; until May 22nd

THE Octagon’s production of Diane Samuels’ play “Kindertransport” sur prised and impressed me. The heart-rending stories

of the Jewish children evac uated from Nazi Germany just before the start of the Second World War have become known through excellent TV documen taries featuring interviews with survivors and old film. Thus I wondered how a

stage production could hope to replicate the inten sity and truth of such a ter rible historical event. But Mark Babych’s

direction of this thoughtful and compelling drama explores much more than a single tragic episode. This is a play about all

displaced people, about how fragile is our sense of who and what we are, and has provocative contempo rary resonances. For me it was also a deeply insightful

exploration of one of the strongest bonds, the moth er-child relationship. Claire Redcliffe gives a

powerful performance as Eva, the nine-year-old Jew ish girl forced to leave her mother, Helga (Anne Northam), to be sent to an unknown future in Britain. The action moves

between their anguish and the present day conflict between daughter Faith (Christabel Fellowes) and her mother, Evelyn, mov ingly evoked by Janice McKenzie. Octagon regular Ann

Rye takes on the part of Lil Miller, who moves between both times. Alexander Delamere acts a variety of male figures, representing evil and fear. This is a well-constructed

play with twists and revela tions that kept me intrigued throughout and sympathetic, rounded char acters who will remain in my mind for a long time. Catch this if you can. It

will surprise you too. PIPPA MUNR0
