speed broadband technology to exchanges serving virtually every home and business (99.9 per cent) in Lancashire by summer 2005. Three Ribble Valley exchanges

- Chatburn, Gisbum and Stony- hurst - are among 13 to be con verted early as part of BT’s latest initiative. But the exchanges at Bolton-by-Bowland, Slaidburn, Dunsop Bridge and Salmesbury are just too small to warrant the work.

BT’s new approach replaces its

broadband registration trigger scheme, whereby conversion of the local exchange was only trig gered by a target number of peo ple registering an interest in broadband services. Often it was left to locals to encourage enough people to register. The rollout programme for the

13 Lancashire exchanges will be announced in detail by the end of June. Meanwhile BT has pledged to

work in partnership with public sector and other organisations to help bring broadband to the four communities served by its small est exchanges, which were not assigned triggers under the previ ous scheme due to size. It will look at using alternative

technologies including wireless and satellite broadband.

Parking plans hit dead end

PLANS to build a long-stay car park in the centre of Whalley, in an attempt to solve the traffic problems in the village, have come to a dead end. More than 50 villagers

attended a special meeting on Thursday, requested by three parish councillors to rescind a previous minute, to discuss the possibility of a long-stay car park on Vale House Gardens - land owned by the parish coun cil, next to the bus station. That would have enabled

Ronnan won a majority vote to allow the county to go ahead with resurfacing the bus station, new signage and upgrading the pavement to comply with the new regulations affecting dis abled people, making it impossi ble for a car park to be built. Villagers are invited to attend
