UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN (12a); The Grand Cinema; from Friday, May 7th
ACADEMY Award nom inee Diane Lane stars as Frances Mayes, a 35- year-old San Francisco writer whose perfect life has just taken an unex pected and unpleasant detour. A bitter divorce leaves
her with terminal writer’s block and feeling extremely depressed, leaving her best friend, Patti, beginning to think she may never recover. Patti persuades her to
go on a tour of Tuscany where, on a whim, she decides to buy a run down 300-year-old villa. Even though she does
n't speak the language and doesn't know the local customs, she wants to live her fantasy and turn the house into her romantic fairytale home. Reality quickly sets in,
not least the practicalities of trying to find reliable builders to take on the job. But with only her will, intelligence and stub
bornness, Frances perse veres and the process of rebuilding the villa is mir rored as she also rebuilds her life and self-belief. Along the way she finds
trouble, new friends and, ultimately, even new love. Based on Frances
Mayes’ autobiographical book and directed by Audrey Wells, this is a gentle stroll through stunning Tuscan scenery, with some whimsical cul ture clash comedy. Although a little mean
dering at times, it is an engaging and endearing tale to remind us th a t nothing is ever quite as bad as it seems.

Concert will raise cash for hospice
FOR those unfamiliar with Steeleye Span, perhaps the song “All Around My Hat” will refresh the memory. That song took the band into the
charts and on to “Top of the Pops”, mak ing them a household name. More recently it spawned an hilarious
“Fast Show” spoof, but that’s another story.
Steeleye Span will be appearing at the
King George’s Hall, Blackburn, on May 17th, as part of their 35th anniversary world tour. The concert has been organised by
David Lewis Promotions, run by Nelson man David Lewis, and all profits will go towards the Pendleside Hospice for a new ambulance. In all £35,000 is needed for the project
and David would be delighted if Ribble Valley people could help meet this target.
FOLLOWING a hugely- successful West End run, Harold Pinter’s masterpiece “Betrayal” is coming to Manchester. Starring Samantha Janus, who takes
While Steeleye Span has always looked
to the music and stories of the past for its inspiration, the band members have also looked to the future. This year sees the release of the first
new material from the band with Maddy Prior since 1996. “They Called Her Babylon” is an
album that will immediately fit into the band's distinguished canon. The album features fascinating inter
pretations of traditional tales, the choral harmonies, the blend of powerful rock with evocative, lyrical instrumentation- all presented with experience and inspi ration. The band will be performing new songs
from the album, as well as old favourites, at the Blackburn show. For a chance to see Steeleye Span ring the box office on 01254 582582.

IT is nine years since Ribchester Amateur The atrical Society’s last performance of “Habeas Corpus”. Next Thursday, Friday and Saturday there is
a rare opportunity to see it again, and enjoy what promises to be both an entertaining and hilarious night out. Alan Bennett’s “Habeas Corpus” is definite
ly very funny, if somewhat risque, with an adult theme that means sexy! Should be a memorable evening out for the grown-ups!
