Drugs menace heads speak out

THREE-Ribble Valley sec ondary school head teachers have, for the first time, publicly aired their concerns about the prevalence of substance misuse and consumption of illegal drugs
in the area. In an unprecedented move, Bow-
land High School head teacher Mr Maurice Graham, Ribblesdale High School’s Ms Glynne Ward and St Augustine’s RC High’s Mr Anthony McNamara have outlined their con cerns in a letter to the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times. Although they stress the fact that
the majority of young people do not misuse substances, the head teachers go on to ask tha t all parents and guardians familiarise themselves with current advice on how to best identify and respond to signs of pos sible substance misuse in their own children. This open and pro-active
approach to the issue has received widespread support from the local community. Clitheroe Police Inspec. Bob Ford
said: "We very much share the con cern of the headteachers in the Rib ble Valley and support what they are
doing. “We are proactively targeting
drug dealers in the Ribble Valley area as we are aware that cannabis and ecstasy are freely available if you know where to look. We would encourage parents and those in con tact with children to be on the look out for the tell-tale signs of drug abuse.” He added: “Because the Ribble
Valley is an affluent area it means children and young people have their own money and can afford to buy drugs. We have had cases where youngsters have traded expensive designer clothing and mobile phones in exchange for drugs then claim to have lost the items. This is some thing parents should be aware of. Insp Ford continued: “Once drugs
take their grip it is difficult to get out of the spiral. “Lives are ruined and the educa
tional side goes downhill, as well as the serious health effects. Some deal ers offer young teenagers free drugs for the first few times then as soon as they are hooked they have to start paying. I have encountered children as young as 11 with cannabis or ecstasy. "Parents should be aware that the

ty.” Insp. Ford added that the police

tive work with all the secondary schools in the area and deliver drugs education to pupils from Years 8 to 11. It is vital that young people are as informed as possible. “We also send teams of drugs edu
cation workers on to the streets to work with young people. “Our joint work with the Ribble
Valley Crime and Disorder Partner ship means that young people in the Ribble Valley are receiving help and advice on the dangers of drugs and how to take responsibility for their own personal safety.” Miss Ava Rushworth, youth man
