CLITHEROE scratch golfer Mark Ashworth has
been called up by Lancashire. Impressive early season form, including a top 10
finish in the recent Lancshire Amateur Champi onships, have seen him selected for the Red Rose team for their match against Yorkshire at Fairhaven
at the weekend. Apart from Ashworth (70-0-70) and Andrew
Walmsley (74-4-70), Clitheroe’s big guns were miss ing from the leaderboard after the first round of the 36-hole Tom Morris competition. Don Partington continued his fine form by taking
top spot with a nett 68, and David Knowles was well pleased to card 84-15-69 and slip into second place
ahead of five players on 70. The Archie Moro, Steve Dean, Peter Harrison trio
are all-too-familiar with second-place finishes. Their 81 points in the three-man team event
proved to be five shots off the pace set by the experi enced team led by John Whowell, ably assisted by Peter Murtagh and Derek McIntyre. William Tyrell returned an impressive nett 64 in
the junior medal, but could not match Jack Roth- well’s incredible nett 60, while Sarah Hale continued her run in the prize list by taking third spot with a 67.

witnessed what he described as awesome golf when pairing up with the Accrington GC duo of D. Yer- bury and B. Martland for Clitheroe’s Open Senior Fourball. First on the tee at 7-30 a.m., the Accrington pair
amassed 48 points to take first place by one point from visitors from Bolton - both winning pairs mak ing complimentary remarks about the golf club, course and hospitality when receiving their prizes from captain Ray Ashley. Roy Ellis returned 76-11-65 to win the Millennium
Trophy at Whalley GC by the narrowest of margins from Bill Banks (81-15-66). The High Handicap Trophy was won by Jerry

Readstone seal cup triumph to crown successful campaign
READSTONE United Under 9s are pictured prior to
capturing the North Valley League Cup. The locals came through to win their final and pick up
a welcome piece of silverware, but the side were unluck ily denied a league and cup double, ending their league
season as runners-up. (s). Meanwhile, United’s Under 13s Blue girls finished

their season off in style with a convincing 15-0 victory
over Brierfield Celtic. Emily Crake went nap, scoring five goals, while Alice Holmes added four of her own as the locals headed
towards an impressive scoreline. Player-of-the-match Ella McDermidd also grabbed a
hat-trick, before a Jenna Birkett brace and a single strike from Jessica Owens rounded off the game.
Waggon prepare for new season
NEWLY-formed football club WFC Clitheroe have already started their preparations for the forthcoming season. After being accepted by the Craven
and District Football League, train ing commenced this Wednesday and
will run each week, with all interest ed players asked to meet at the Waggon and Horses public house at
7 p.m. each week. On Saturday, the club are holding
a barbecue and disco night at the Waggon to unveil the side’s new
strips which have been kindly spon sored by
Gee.Co.Precast and High- moor Morgage Services. The evening starts at 7-30 p.m.
and tickets are available a t the Waggon.

Final pack of Wolves Anna strikes gold receive recognition
ANNA Griffiths excelled once again as she struck gold at the National Junior League meeting at Bebington. Despite fulfilling just

CLITHEROE Wolves concluded their series of presentation evenings at St Michael and St John’s at the end of another sea son of achievement. The Under 8s kicked
the night off with top goalscorer Nikolai Petria- ho claiming the strikers prize, and Joshua Dean beating off stiff competi tion from Maxim Petria- ho and Jack Nightingale to receive the player of the year accolade. Most improved player'
was picked up by James Atherton, while the man ager’s player award went to Lorenzo Leoni. And the number one
sportsman for the side was William Butterwick. The Under 11s girls’ side
saw honours go to Anna Hickling as top scorer, while player of the year was Alicia Walker, with Amber Bateman and Francesska Rigg in close contention. Manager’s player went to Helen Conlon,
the sportsperson’s award went
to Danielle Parker, and the most improved player nom ination was made to Sophie Cox.
The Under 12s’ awards
went to player of the year Joe Nightingale, with William Tyrell a close run ner-up. George Peregrine proved
to be top goal scorer, while the manager’s award went to Jack Parkinson. Ben White was named
most improved player by manager Richard Pere grine. Manager Simon Box-
Morton’s Under 13 girls saw Karie Hanson named top goal scorer, and Suzanne Bailey named player of the year. Bronte Box-Morton was
runner-up for the player of the year accolade, the most improved player was Shaah Howie and the manager’s player went to Natashia Wilkinson. The Under 13s’ manag
er’s player accolade was awarded to Mathew Salis bury, the most improved player went to Tom Webb,
while the player of the year honour was picked up by Aaron Sharp ahead of Mathew Sedgewick. Top goalscorer was Stephen Tandy. The Wolves Under 15
Girls team, led by manager Shirley Veevers, had a whole host of awards to present, starting with the Sue Saunders Award that went to Bella Perigrine. Chelsea Cook was
named top goalscorer, while player of the year went to Joanne Green ahead of Carly Thomas. The manager’s player
award was collected by Brogan Cook, and Natalia Robinson took home the most improved player acco lade. Mick Scriven’s Under 15s
also took home a handful of honours, with Tom Ruther ford the leading goalscorer in the side, while Martin Lafrancecchina achieved player of the year status. He beat Simon Mashiter
to the top player honour, while the most improved player went to Simon Wor
thington. The Under 15s saw
Adam Gatens take the manager’s player award. The first Under 16s side
to be honoured were man ager Mark Gidlow’s men, with the top goalscorer accolade going to Jake Chadwick. The team also saw prizes
go to Liam Gidlow for play er of the year, ahead of Gino Peregrine, the manag er’s player award picked up by Simon Ryan, and the most improved player acco lade go to Daniel Hull. They were followed by
Bill Holden’s Under 16s with Russell Thompson proving to be top goalscor er for the year. Chris Wrathall was pre
sented with the top honour for the side as he picked up the player of the year award, ahead of Mick Barker. And Paul Worthington
picked up the most improved player award, before Liam McCarthy received the manager’s player trophy.

Rugby club christen Littlemoor clubhouse
CLITHEROE Rugby Club held their 27th annu al dinner and presenta tions - the first to be held in the new Littlemoor clubhouse. After a three-course meal,
the assembled players and guests were entertained to some stimulating and thought-provoking speech es.
The loyal toast was pro
posed by club chairman Andrew Thornber, with a toast to the Lancashire and Rugby Football Unions by captain David Watson. The toast to guests was made by president Colin Sil-
cock. The presentations fol
lowed, with the principal prize winners being second XV player of the season
Mark Curphy, most improved player of the sea son Alex Hough, clubman of the year Phil Isherwood, players’player of the year- for the second year in a row - Andrew Rigby and Gold en Harpoon winner David Tattersall. The evening was rounded
off with entertainment from Sky TV comedian Nicky Newsholme.
One-sided Open League win for Clitheroe A team
CLITHEROE Tennis Club’s open A team progressed serenely through to the third round of the East Lancashire Open League knockout with an ultimately one sided victory over Blackburn Northern C. In the top match, Derek Parrott and
Phil Mileham found their best form of the summer in holding off Blackburn’s num ber one pair, winning 6-4,6-3. This gave them ample time to spectate
on Stephen Pym and Tony Bush’s undu lating display against the second duo. Having thrown away an early lead to
be taken into a fruitless tie-break, they immediately bounced back with some style to win the second set 6-0. Their opponents tried to fight back in
the third, but they were not going to make the same mistake twice and closed the tie out 6-2. In the return rubbers, Parrott and Mileham needed just 35 minutes to claim
the scalps of the second string pair, and Pym and Bush did very well to win a close encounter with the top team 6-3 6-4. The cup competition will now start to
hot up with a draw against a top division side looking likely in the next round. The mixed A team wheeled out the big
guns, with Julie and Stephen Pym, Paul Ainger and Mary Brass proving too much of a handful for Sunnyhurst A. Clitheroe marched to an emphatic vic
tory, not affording their opponents from Darwen the luxury of even one set. The junior B team won plenty of plau
dits, but alas only one set out of eight in their encounter with Brierfield. After losing their first match, Richard
Bell and Mark Higson eked out a draw in their second match of the day with victo ry in a tie break, while Matthew Cornish and Dominic Parrott went down narrow ly in both of their rubbers.
Henman-esque revival volleys
Whalley B into semi-final clash WHALLEY Tennis Club’s B team pro duced a Henman-like comeback to move into the semi-finals of the East Lan cashire Open Knockout. The Whalley side had only recently
beaten Sunnyhurst B from Darwen in a league match, but had a rude awakening by dropping the first sets. However,
the.pairings of Martin Haworth and David Walters, and Guy
Purves and Mathew Cuynes proved too strong for the opposition, and won all four rubbers. The ladies continued their winning run by defeating a strong Burnley B team by
five sets to three. The team comprised of Sandra Frost,
Helen Maher, Hillary Dodding and Les ley Parker.
Unbeaten half century for Steve as
Rimington stay the pace with leaders THERE were big wins for the top three in the Clitheroe and District Cricket League, with Catholic SC leading the way. They put Ribchester to
Craig top scoring with an unbeaten 44. The hosts were restricted to 71-8, before Catholic SC knocked off the total with out loss. Steve Whalley smacked
the sword with a 10-wicket hammering, with Paul
an unbeaten half century and Ian Bythell notched 26
as Rimington overcame Calderstones by nine wick ets. Riverside defeated defending champions Chip ping by eight runs, whilst Chipping Ramblers earned their second win of the sea son with a two-wicket win against Low Moor.
