•V'i, Retreat builds new friendships
“SHARING the Light of Jesus” was the theme of a retreat day for primary school pupils at St Augus tine’s RC High School, Billington. Organised by the high
school’s RE department, the event was attended by 210 Year 5 pupils from St Augus
tine’s 10 partner primary schools in the area. The emphasis was on making new friends and enjoying a day at “the big school”. Our photograph shows 20
of the pupils, two from each of the 10 participating schools, with their teachers in the background, (s)
SjHOQ-HBBJHj* Controversial takeaway approved
HOT food will soon be sold from premises in Whalley Road, Clitheroe, after the go-ahead was given by the borough council’s planning officers for the conversion of a shop to a takeaway - cre ating three jobs. Four letters of objection
were sent to the council raising concerns about the lack of parking in the area, increased litter, increased
cooking smells and fear of vandalism associated with late night drinkers visiting the takeaway. Planning Officer Mr
Mark Ollerenshaw felt that a takeaway in the area would not exacerbate traffic congestion as a lot of takeaway food is ordered and delivered. Members of Ribble Val
ley Borough Council’s Planning and Develop
ment Committee gave the project their approval sub ject to conditions relating to the types and methods of air filtration and extrac tion systems, the use of premises shall be restricted to 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sun day to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 11-30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Coun. Frank Dyson (St Mary’s) was happy to support the application.

Mass heralds
PUPILS who will attend St Augustine’s R.C. High School from September were welcomed at a special Mass held at the Billington school. It was celebrated by two
Jesuit priests, Father Edmund Willoughby, chairman of gover nors at the school, and Father Adrian Howell, from Hurst Green. The service was entitled
“Share the Light” and began with the headteacher or Year 6
teacher from each of St Augus tine's 10 partner primary schools lighting a candle at the altar, accompanied by a representa tive pupil from their Year 6 group. More than 350 people, includ
ing grandparents and other fam- ily members, attended the evening service at the school. Pictured are representatives
from all of St Augustine's part ner primaries holding the sym bols they brought to the altar, (s)
