captain - and Michael Owen. The player dismissed during the World
Cup in .1998 seems like a different Beckham, one from a previous era. People no longer speak of St Etienne, but of Sapporo and Old Trafford, the moments when he became a true national icon. Beckham has changed since France 98. and so have England. More than anything, Eriksson needs other players to start overshadowing his captain

and vice captain. France have Zidane but they also have
Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and David Trezeguet, individuals who are as likely to prove decisive as their illustrious colleague. And their list goes on further than that. But while Owen is handily placed to
challenge Sir Bobby Charlton's England goalscoring record in time, his strike partner Wayne Rooney is also emerging as a big talent in the famous white shirt. This class of 2004, for so long expected
to peak in 2006, have the potential to win in Portugal. But France have the men who have
been there and done it, a side largely atthe other end of the spectrum - with the likes of Barthez, Lizarazou,Thuram and Desailly. And Zidane is arguably still the best
player on the planet - although Barcelona's Brazilian genius Ronaldinho is swiftly closing in on that title. But, while the Nou Camp's darling will
be on Copa America duty with Brazil, the best in Europe will be fighting it out. Beckham's ambition to better himself is
part of what attracted Madrid. Luis Figo claimed recently that
Beckham's greatest talent was his "work ethic”, which has never been the mark of a
genuine great. Euro 2004 could yet be his tournament,
but he could yet be superseded by Gerrard, who many feel will inherit the captaincy of
his country. But England's challenge will depend on
more than Eriksson getting his midfield
personnel spot-on. Keeping clean sheets has been a major
problem, and in the absence of Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate, Gareth Southgate, Wes Brown and Matthew Upson, the country will be praying John Terry and Sol Campbell stay fit. France have managed to move into the
tournament without conceding any goals in 11 games, but England will feel the pace of Owen and Rooney, and the energy of that midfield unit, will have a chance of undoing an ageing backline in Lisbon on
Sunday. Advertiser and limes AThe Clitberoe rp
