England hopes crushed again on penalties
by Phil Simpson
SO, the hopes and dreams of a nation have once again been quashed. But how many times have the English fans said that over the past few years? Then again, we should come to expect matches involving England being concluded on penalties nowadays, shouldn’t we? To be brutally honest, Portugal deserved to book their place in the semi-finals of Euro 2004 and, on reflection, it was a fair result. But it the manner of our defeat that was so galling, and that we should really be the ones in the last four. However, we can thank Swiss referee Urs Meier for why we didn’t. Sol Campbell’s,^ last minute goal in injury time at the end of 90 minutes should have stood - no question. Meier stated the reason he failed to give the goal was for a foul by
Campbell on Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo. But after he came out a few days later and stated it was John Terry who had actually influenced his decision to chalk off the goal, you could tell Meier wasn’t sure. Anyhow, Meier did disallow the goal, and England ultimately crashed out of a major tournament they only way they seem to know how. But it was written in the stars, that once Campbell had had a goal
m
disallowed, England would go on to lose on spot kicks. Remind you of a certain tournament in 1998? However, this time around, you honestly believed they could go all the way. And with big names such as Spain, Italy and Germany all falling by the wayside in the group stages, there was no reason not to think that. But you got the feeling that once Wayne Rooney (pictured above) hobbled off midway through the first half, our chance had gone. Rooney was the lynchpin to our attacking play, and once the 18-year- old had disappeared down the tunnel, all that disintegrated. England were ahead for the best part of 80 minutes, but there was always
that voice at the back of your head saying “we’re not going to win this”. On reflection, those big names I just mentioned that have fallen by the wayside - now have no one at the helm. Both Germany’s Rudi Voller and Spain’s Inaki Saez have both stepped down from their post, while the Italians have replaced Giovanni Trapattoni with Marcello Lippi. And so, looking at those facts, many people will be no doubt calling for the head of Sven Goran Eriksson. But seriously, is there anyone out there who could do a better job with the players at his disposal? The simple answer is yes. As for the rest of the quarter-final fall guys, was there any bigger shock than the French? Current European champions and a team not long since crowned Kings of Europe,' against a bunch of so-called misfits. Greece were a side coming into the event who had never registered a victory in a major tournament. But once Portugal had become the first, and they had took the point that ultimately knocked the Spanish out the tournament, came the icing on the cake. A solitary strike was enough, but France deserved to be on the plane home. As for Holland, well, they are in the semi-finals having won just one game so far - and that was against Latvia! But the team of the tournament so far has to be the Czech Republic - who have won all three of their group games and then done exactly what was required against Denmark. They were my tip at the start of the tournament - so much so that I have a £10 bet at 14-1 on them to win! - and they will stay my tip. Greece might cause them a few problems, but the class of the Czechs will see them through. As for Holland v Portugal? Well that is anyone’s guess.
The LIEFA EURO 2004^ final tournament opens on 12 June 2004 with hosts Portugal playing Greece at the Dragao stadium, Porto.
GROUP GAMES On each day of the 16-team group stage there will be two games, one at 18.00 GET (17.00 focal) and another at 20.45 (19.45 local) in the same pool. In the final sets of
group games, both fixtures will be played simultaneously at 20.45. During the UEFA EURO 2004™ group stage, each team will meet their group opponents once, with three points for a win and one for a draw. The top two teams progress to the quarter-finals, the knock out phase of the competition, with the win ners advancing' to the semi-finals and then the final.
TIEBREAKERS If teams finish level on points, then the winner of the match between the sides in question will finish highest, or should they have drawn, goal difference, followed by goals scored, qualifying record for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2004™, a fair play ranking and finally either a penalty shoot-out or drawing of
lots.
KNOCKOUT PHASE The quarter-finals will then be played over the following four evenings before the first two rest days on 28 and 29 June. The semi-finals are on the evenings of 30 June and 1 July, before Lisbon's Luz stadium stages the final on Sunday 4 July.
