Mini swim event is a
splash hit CLITHEROE Dolphins held a hugely successful mini-Olympics event at Ribblesdale Pool, where many of the club’s eight to 12-year-old swimmers took part. All in all over 80 com
petitors were in action divided into four different countries - America, Aus tralia, Russia and China. The lead changed fre
quently, but America emerged victorious with 72 points, followed by Aus tralia with 66, China on 59 and Russia with 50. Individual winners for

the American team were Under 11s Kara Singleton in the butterfly and Victo ria Haworth in the freestyle. They were joined by
Under 12s Rebecca Hay who won the two-length backstroke. In the Australian camp,
Under 9s Mathia Buggie took the one-length freestyle, Abigail Beckett the breaststroke and Michael Johnstone the backstroke. The Under 10s proved
nearly as successful in Phillip Sellars taking first in the two-length breast stroke and Luke Tasker swimming to victory in the one-length butterfly. They were joined by an
Under 12s winner in the form of Bryn Phillip for his endeavours in the two- length butterfly. Third place China had
four successful winners in the individual events, two of which came for the Under 12s Jessica Collinson and
Elliott Holden took the freestyle and breaststroke respectively, while Under' 10s team mate James Ibbotson did equally as well with a win in the two- length freestyle. Finally China’s individ

outdone, Russia saw two wins in the backstroke in the Under 11s for Kristian Holden, and Under 10s competitor Katie Holgate. They both were joined
in the collection of their certificates by Under 11 swimmer Alicia Walker, who excelled in the two- length breaststroke. This event would not
have been possible with out the help of many par ents who volenteered their services and the Ribbles dale Pool staff.

Wolves Blue ........................................ 0 CLITHEROE Wolves Blue squad played superbly in the Challenge Cup Final on Sunday, and the score didn’t adequately reflect the commitment and dedication displayed by the squad. Halton Hotshots have been unbeaten
all season, and Clitheroe Wolves Blue were attempting to overturn this, but it was not to be. All of the squad played together fan
tastically and supported each other both in this cup final and throughout the sea son. The result could have been completely
different if Robinson’s shot had finished in the back of the net. But unfortunately it hit the post and
went wide early in the first half. Halton could have scored at least three
more goals in the second half but for Sam Purdy’s excellent performance in goal. Ciitheroe Wolves Blue squad finished
as runners up in the Challenge Cup and joint second in the league, which is a phe nomenal achievement for their first sea-

C L ITH E R O E Open Tennis A team extend ed th e ir unbeaten run to th re e matches on S a tu rd a y - b u t n o t before being subjected to a few scares by Whal ley B in their East Lan cashire League Second Division fixture. The match ebbed and
flowed, with each team winning two rubbers to cancel each other out. However, with the
Clitheroe second pair of Stephen Pym and Tony Bush taking a crucial set against the Whalley first string, the honours went to Clitheroe, winning 3-2. In the top match, Derek
Parrott and Phil Mileham were stunned by the whirl wind start of their oppo site numbers and were 4-0 down before they began to find their feet. Eventually they forced
a tie break, but struggled to overcome the dominant net play of their oppo nents, who edged the breaker and then closed out the match 7-6,6-1. On number two court,
Pym and Bush also found the going tough, but their
WMm match of the season, Whalley Tennis Club’s A team narrowly lost to Feniscowles A, who were last season’s runners up. Andrew Moore and Richard Lambert
secured Whalley’s only victory, but there was little between the two teams. Whalley’s second pairing, Danny Roff
and Henry Farrer, lost one match in three sets, and the other on a tie break. The B team also narrowly lost, this
time against Clitheroe A team in a Sec ond Division clash. The home advantage proved decisive,
and although Guy Purves and Gordon Pimberton won both their rubbers, Clitheroe gained the extra point by
understanding of each other’s game has ripened in recent weeks and they were convincing 6-3, 6-1 winners. In the return rubbers,
Parrott and Mileham knew th a t the match would probably be decided on countback, and so took few chances to ensure a 6- 0,6-2 victory. However, the shock of
the day was unfurling on the other court, as Pym and Bush took the first set against the strong Whal ley top pair, and had chances to wrap up the
Charitable end to darts and dominoes season

last week. Jimmy Hargreaves and Judith

for the Matthew Thompson Open Doubles to be played at Rushden Street Bowling Club on Saturday, May 22nd. Entries are £6 per pair to Jean Heys, 10 Grimshaw Street,

virtue of winning more sets. The C team had a better weekend
with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Burnley D. James Burke and Tom Ormerod,
David Lynch and Peter Heyes winning the games, The Whalley Ladies were also in
action against Burnley with honours being even. The Whalley side comprised of Hillary Dodding, Helen Maher, Rachel O’Sullivan and Lesley Parker. The first American Tournament took
place in glorious sunshine on Sunday and was eventually won by Nickie Hop- wood. The next tournament is on Sunday, June 6th with a 1-30 p.m. start.
match in two sets. Eventually their resis
tance waned and Whalley took the rubber 2-6,6-4,6- 0, but not before the vital first set had set up victory for the Clitheroe team. The B team secured a
solid victory in the Third Division against Crow Wood B. The star of the court
was Gordon Whittaker, who was not only playing his first match for Clitheroe, but at the age of 42 was also playing the first-ever representative sports match of his life at
any level! Playing alongside the seasoned Neil Gunn, they won both of their matches, while young guns Robert Brass and Daniel Bush had to be satisfied with one victory out of two, which was nonetheless enough to take home the spoils 3-1. The junior team suf
fered an agonisingly close defeat a t the hands of Burnley A. Facing possibly their
strongest opposition on a cold, blustery Saturday morning, Clitheroe were
not quite able to overcome some early setbacks. Will Aspinall and Josh
Black gradually built their confidence against the Burnley first pair and pegged back the rampant Burnley side to 4-3, but were unable to win any more games in that set, losing 6-3. In the second set, the
wind was again a factor, with Burnley winning through by the same score. Meanwhile, the two sec
ond pairs faced off, with Matt Hanson and Andrew Hartley building on last week’s successes to win through 6-4,6-1. Unfortunately, their
combination of dogged retrieval and confident volleying and passing shots was not enough to see them past Burnley’s first pair, who proved too strong for them on the day in their second rubber. . Despite Aspinall’s and
Black's comfortable victo ry in their second rubber, Burnley took the honours on a games countback by 34 games to 33. The junior B team had a
much more comfortable ride against Townley B,
taking maximum points in overcoming them 4-0 with out dropping a set. The Clitheroe pairings
of Emma Calvert with Jack Dewhurst, and Jen nifer Holgate with Richard Bell were dwarfed by their opponents, but their superior technique and match play experience proved too much for the league’s newcomers, as the Clitheroe
foursome
dropped only 19 games in winning the eight sets to take them to victory. Meanwhile, with over
200 entries for this year’s club knockout tourna ments, last Sunday’s draw threw up some mouth watering first round encounters. The pick of the ties
threw Karen Farnhill against Julie Pym in the ladies’ singles, while Derek Parrott will have to fight it out against his A team doubles partner, Phil Mile ham, in the men’s singles. With first round match
es due to be decided by June 6th, there will be thrills and spills aplenty as the season takes off in the coming months.
Disappointing end
Waddinglon...............1 Gargrave..................... 5 IT was a disappointing end to the season for Waddington as their last chance to win any silver ware slipped away. The locals got off to a
bad s ta r t and were two goals down within five minutes - both from set pieces. And then after 20 min
utes Waddington conced ed a penalty to go 3-0 down. A devastated Wadding
ton had an uphill climb, but they did pick them selves up and managed to create some chances. A well-executed header
from Timothy Fagan gave them a lifeline, and they carved out one or two
more chances before half time. After
the break
Waddington came out on top but couldn’t find the much needed goal to change the game. After 20 minutes of
pressure from Wadding ton, Gargrave broke and scored to make it 4-1 and deflate Waddington’s spir it.
And five minutes before
full-time, Gargrave made it 5-1. Waddington would like
to thank Dugdales TV and Sky Specialist for sponsoring the game. Waddington’s presenta
tion evening is to be held at the Waddington Social Club on Sunday, May 30th.
