‘at home’ THE new “man at the top” of the Ribblesdale Camera Club, Jeff Cowling, held a “Chairman's Evening” with a difference when he and his wife, Judy, invited the club to their Grindleton home for a photographic evening. There were fine views of
Chatburn and Pendle, as well as many garden flowers to see. Alternatively, a flock of geese made some very good pictures. Impressively arranging the
weather to be fine for the evening, and providing an enjoyable barbeque supper, this was a very auspicious start to Mr Cowling’s chair manship of the club! However, the members had
to work for their supper, as a competition will be held for the best prints and slides taken during the event, to be judged next year.
Biker injured
A MOTORCYCLIST suf fered knee injuries after his Suzuki bike was involved in a collision with a Ford Fiesta. Traffic ground to a halt on
Bank Holiday Monday when the accident took place near Gisbum Auction Mart on the A59. No one in the Ford Fiesta
was hurt, but the motorcy clist, who is believed to be from Liverpool, was taken to Burnley General Hospital for medical treatment.
Mystery fire
FIRE crews were called to a small blaze behind Lodemat- ic, Primrose Works, in Clitheroe. The incident took place at
6-30 p.m. on Saturday and it took the firefighters more’ than three hours to put out the fire - the cause of which is unknown. Earlier this week, police reported there was no major damage.
Heartfelt thanks for equipment
A GOLF day and super market foyer collection were just two of the activi ties organised by Clitheroe’s service clubs to raise money for a piece of life-saving equipment. They helped to net

Watchdog urges campaign against water bills hike

HOMES and businesses in the Rib- ble Valley could be faced with an average hike of more than £100 on their water bill under new proposals. United Utilities, suppliers of the bor
ough’s water and sewerage services, has unveiled plans which include a £3.2 bil lion rolling investment programme to maintain and improve services through out the North West. The programme has a 2005 start date and spans five years, but adds an average yearly increase of 7.8% on to customers’ bills over its roll out period.

CLITHEROE market traders have raised £262.34 to help a children’s charity. As part of Lancashire Day, stallholder
Miss Treena Spencer, along with friends and colleagues, hosted a variety of events to aid the local branch of Derian House Children’s Hospice. Activities throughout the day at the Market Place included a raf fle and tombola with prizes donated by the
stallholders. There was a visit from a clown and a magician. To help get both the organisers and the
public into the spirit of things, music was provided by a local band and there was also
a demonstration by a group of cheerlead ers.
Miss Spencer, said: “I would like to

North West is urging home owners and businesses to fight against the proposed increases with a letter and e-mail writing campaign. Says Maurice Terry, WaterVoice
North West chairman: "The increase is somewhat lower than originally suggest ed by United Utilities last summer. However, we believe customers will still be dismayed by its size.” He added: "North West customers

tomers have told us that further increas es at the levels proposed would be unac ceptable and in some cases, simply unaf fordable. "We want to see the price review deliv
er a good deal for water customers - a reliable service at a price which is afford able to all. “Further environmental improve
ments must be balanced with appropri ate concern for the financial and econom ic health of the region. We believe that the current proposals fail to achieve that
and therefore do not meet the expecta tions of customers." But while WaterVoice North West
wants people to send in anti-increase let ters and e-mails to its offices in Bridge- water House, Whitworth Street, Manch ester, which it will gather as evidence of dissatisfaction to present to Ofwat, Mr John Roberts, Chief Executive of Unit ed Utilities, said: “We face tougher regu lations for drinking water quality, new requirements to safeguard the environ ment and higher expectations from cus tomers. Price rises have been kept to the minimum necessary for a long-term sus tainable, efficient and securely financed water industry.”

HOTFOOT husband and wife team David and Sonia Owen pulled out all the stops to fin ish the BUPA Great Manch ester Run inside their target time-just! They first tackled the 10km
challenge in 2003, finishing in one hour and five minutes and raising £250 for Cancer Research UK. This year the couple, pictured

left, wanted to beat both those figures by raising more cash and finishing in under an hour. Despite unusually hot weather
on the day of the run, they man aged to cross the line in 59 min utes and 45 seconds - a full 15 seconds inside their target. They also hope to have raised
around £300 for the North West Air Ambulance once all their sponsor money is in. “It was hard going on a really

hot day, but our training paid off and we did it,” said a delighted Mrs Owen, of Pasturelands Drive, Billington. “We just want to thank every
one who has supported us again, especially all the staff at Clitheroe Community Hospital, where I work.”

responded to a report of two men using drugs in the toilets of a Whal ley public house. Jackson (30), of
Marine Road West, Morecambe, pleaded guilty to possession of all four drugs. He was fined a
total of £500 and ordered to pay £65 costs. Mr Kevin Pre
ston (defending) said his client was a man of previous good character. He had never
even been cau tioned by the police. “He was found in
possession of quite an array of drugs, but they were all small quantities,” said Mr Preston. “I t was the begin ning of a stag weekend which was going to last for three days. “That was why
he had stocked up, so to speak,” added Mr Preston.
