WITH fuel prices continuing to rise inexorably, the economy-minded
motorist is in something of a tight spot. On the whole, modern cars are much more
fuel-efficient than their counterparts of five years ago, but ditching their current model and splashing out on a new hi-tech replace ment is just not an option for most people. If cash constraints forbid the new car route to cheaper motoring, you are left with one option - trying to drive more economically. Here are 10 useful tips for getting that
extra mileage out of your car’s fuel tank: 1. Don’t leave the car idling waiting for the
engine to warm up. On cold days drive off immediately and allow the engine to warm up while you stick to a medium rev range. 2. Drive at steady speeds. Anticipate
developments ahead that might slow you down and reduce your speeds accordingly; obstructions may have cleared by the time you arrive. Use the car’s highest gear wher ever possible. 3. Do not step on the accelerator while
coasting and keep the car in gear. If you have to stop for more than a minute or so, turn the engine off. 4. Accelerate briskly but not aggressively,
moving up through the gears as quickly as possible. Drive in fifth gear from about 30 m.p.h. and try to keep to low revs. 5. Use only 75% of the vehicle’s top speed. 6. Avoid “pedal to the metal” acceleration
and use of kickdown functions with auto matic or automated manual cars. 7. Check tyre pressures regularly and keep
tyres properly inflated. 8. Remove the roof rack when it is not in se - the extra wind-resistance that this cre
ates can make quite some difference to fuel consumption over time. 9. Remove unwanted objects from the car,
particularly heavy items, and turn off any electrical systems that you do not need. 10. Service the vehicle regularly, keeping it
in good working order and ensure that the engine is functioning at optimum levels.

Porsche goes back to the future with a huge leap
by Andy Enright
built today merit the term, and in pole position among them is Porsche’s iconic 911. The latest model - the 997 series-
T
has a silhouette similar to its prede cessor, the 996, but the detailing is refreshingly clean and simple, much like that car’s predecessor, the air cooled 993. What is more, the 997 is the first 911 model to be launched with two normally-aspirated engines of different capacities. Although the shape is reassuringly ’ familiar, in fact only the roof is car ried over from the previous model and a whopping 80% of the car is new. Porsche fans will realise the huge step forward when they hear August Auchleitner, director of 911 development, say that “the 997 is to the 996 what the 993 was to the 964.” A huge leap forward in terms of sophistication, quality and driv ing enjoyment in other words. Under that sleek bodywork comes
a bigger, punchier engine. I t is still a flat six and it is still hung out at the back, but Carrera buyers will get a 321 b.h.p. 3.6-litre power plant and Carrera S customers will be treated to a 350 b.h.p. 3.8-litre unit. It is a naming convention that mirrors the Boxster and Cayenne ranges and is easy to comprehend. Cabriolet and

four-wheel drive coupe models will follow in 2005, with the mighty Turbo being pencilled in for a 2006 launch. Targa models are unlikely to appear, as sales of this body style have tailed off significantly in recent years. Purists will be glad to see a return
to the 993-style round headlamps, the so-called “runny-egg smeared on” lamps of the 996 being con signed to history. The wheelarches are pumped up to accept the Car rera’s 18 in. wheels and the 19 in. wheels of the Carrera S, giving this 911 a voluptuous coke-bottle profile. The easiest way to tell the two mod els apart is that the Carrera has a
pair of oval tailpipes, whereas the S model sports a quad set of exhausts. That and the badge on the back. Although the cabin of the 996 was
a big leap forward in terms of fit and finish over the 993 series car, it was still prone to.a few squeaks and rat tles. The 997 takes its quality cue from the Cayenne 4x4 and features a three-spoke wheel and in-dash LCD monitor. Some aspects are pure 993, however, such as the location of the air vents and the roll top along the upper dash. The straight line performance of
the 997 Carrera is nigh-on identical to that of the 996 Carrera 2, the extra 6 b.h.p. being offset by the

additional weight. Both hit 60 m.p.h. in 4.9 seconds and zip through 100 m.p.h. in 11 seconds on the way to a top speed of 177 m.p.h. The Carrera S is that little bit feisti- ( er, recording a 4.7 second sprint to 60 and a 10.7 figure to 1Q0 m.p.h. Top speed is pegged at 182 m.p.h. Despite this, the combined fuel economy figure of 24.6 m.p.g. is almost unbelievable. On sale for over seven years, the
996 was sold for longer than any other 911 series. The 997 has been worth the wait,
offering more power, better han dling, better quality, more choice and neater styling.
