Back in the old days, the
apple of any spotty youth’s eye was a Fiesta XR2, 84 b.h.p. worth of the hottest wildest Fiesta money could buy. As insurance costs rose ever
higher and cars became a good deal more powerful, teenagers were priced out of the market. Or have they been? The Zetec-S represents the

young? The Zetec S wears 16 in. alloy
wheels and a rear spoiler, and features a trick sports suspen sion set-up. Two models are set to be offered. There is a petrol version with
the 99 b.h.p. 1.6-litre engine that will be familiar to Fiesta Ghia and Zetec buyers, and then there is a 1.6-litre TDCi diesel-engined version that will appeal to those who prefer a lazier slug of torque and who savour the excellent economy
offered by a diesel engine. With 90 b.h.p. on tap, the
Zetec S TDCi may not be quite so quick off the mark as the petrol-engined version, but it will feel quicker and more mus cular when out on the open road, thanks in no small part to its 200Nm of torque - about the same as that generated by a Renaultsport Clio 182. Now that Citroen’s Saxo and
Peugeot’s 106 are looking a lit tle dog-eared, it is time for Ford to re-establish itself as the first choice for keen younger drivers. Some might accuse the Fiesta
Zetec S of being a sheep in wolf’s clothing. Chances are they will not have driven it.

of mid-range 407 models will be familiar to 406 customers, pow ering as it did the sporting SRi version, and it is a very good unit.
Zippy enough to entertain in
a straight line, it will make 60 m.p.h. in 10.1 seconds and run on to a top speed of 136 m.p.h., helped in no small part by the 407’s very slippery shape. Fuel economy is surprisingly
good for a peppy petrol power plant in what is a deceptively large car, the 407 2.2 returning
a creditable 31 m.p.g. on the combined cycle. Emissions are not this 407’s strongest suit, although the 214g/km figure will not preclude it from busi ness buyers who are sold on the look and feel. Prices kick off at £16,950 for
the SE version, with the SV tacking another £1,000 onto the price and the range-topping Executive priced at £19,950. When stacked up against rivals from Ford, Vauxhall and Renault, those prices look rea sonable. The 407 2.2-litre emerges as
a car that is genuinely desirable in ways you would never have expected.
