WI market has traded

for 35 years THE Clitheroe WI Mar ket has something to cele brate on Tuesday when it will have completed 35 years of trading. To mark the special

occasion, founder member Mrs Annie Slater, of Clitheroe, who is 100 this year, will be attending. The market, which sells

home-made cakes, pies, biscuits, preserves, home grown produce, plants and hand-made crafts, was based for 34 years in Clitheroe Parish Hall. This year a new chapter

in its history opened when it moved to Clitheroe United Reformed Church hall. I t now sells its wares each Tuesday from 10 to 11-30 a.m. from Easter to early December. Admis sion is free and coffee is available.

26 years on the ticket

for Dorothy by Faiza Afzaal

FOR 20 years Mrs Dorothy Hood h a s p a tro l led th e streets of Clitheroe during the course of h er work as traffic warden. At times it has proved almost

a thankless task, but having tackled her work with tact and diplomacy, she has become a familiar figure and acquired many friends along the way. Having fearlessly issued thou

sands of parking tickets to law breaking motorists since 1982, Mrs Hood (60) is now looking forward to putting her feet up. Mrs Hood, who started as a

traffic warden after a week’s training 22 years ago, was born in Preston, but lived in Clitheroe until the age of 12. She attended Ribblesdale

School and later worked as a weaver at Pendle Mill before taking on the role as a traffic warden. Although the public’s percep

tion of the traffic warden is often of a hard-faced woman constantly on the look out for parking offenders, Mrs Hood, who has been working as a pub lic inquiry assistant at Clitheroe Police Station for the past 18 months, told the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times that traf fic wardens were responsible for the safety of the public and the free flow of traffic. She said: “I have always tried

to be fair and treated everyone the same. If a motorist is break ing the law, then I have to issue a ticket. I t is not my fault, although people think it is. It is a job which I get paid for and if drivers continue to flout the

parking regulations, then they will be fined. “Some people may remember

that before the A59 by pass was built motorists travelled through villages to get to Clitheroe. Even today I remem ber major traffic jams through out Billington, Whalley, Barrow and Clitheroe. “I remember there being a

two-way system in Clitheroe and buses driving up Church Brow!” Despite the drawbacks, Mrs

Hood, who now lives in Rishton, has enjoyed every minute of her job.“I have always enjoyed being outside, regardless of the

A walk along Bronte Way

MEMBERS of Clitheroe Nat uralists’ Society completed their walk on Saturday in glo rious weather when Christine Pickles led them along a sec tion of the Bronte Way. Starting in the village of

Stanbury, the route meandered through contrasting land scapes of sheltered valleys and bleak moorland, whose images must have coloured the imagi nations and writings of the Bronte sisters. The group went to Ponden

Reservoir and Ponden Hall, the . supposed site of Thrushcross Grange in Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”. After going along Ponden

Clough, the group had a stiff climb to Watersheddles Reser voir, built in 1870 on the site of, Watersheddles Green, an area

of common pasture. After this the party was relieved to learn it was downhill to Wycoller Dean along well defined foot paths. Along the way, the group noted the erect stone slabs which mark the former boundaries of medieval cattle farms. Stone-chat, swift, tree pipit

and many Canada geese were seen, and among the 61 flowers recorded were ivy leaved crow foot, perennial sow thistle, bog asphodel, and knotted pearl- wort. The leader, Mrs Pickles, was thanked by Mr Frank Mason. The next outing is to Hor-

ton-in-Ribblesdale a week on Saturday, August 14th, when leaders will be B. Warren and F. Mason. To book tel. 01200' 428117.

weather. I have met lots of interesting people, but I am now looking forward to spending my retirement doing lots of garden ing and travelling,” added Mrs Hood. Wishing Mrs Hood well for

her retirement, Insp. Bob Ford, said: “Dorothy has always been a loyal worker, who has complet ed her job under difficult cir cumstances at times and patrolled the streets of Clitheroe, regardless of the weather. “People curse traffic wardens

when they receive a ticket, yet they complain where there isn’t one around.

“Since she has worked at the

police station she has successful ly mastered the computer sys tem and has become something of a ‘silver surfer’. “On behalf of all the staff at

Clitheroe police, I wish her a long and happy retirement.” Mrs Hood is pictured with

her colleagues outside the town’s police station. (CR290704/1) 0 A note to motorists - there

will be three parking attendants swooping on the streets of Clitheroe from September 6th. Anyone caught parking illegally will immediately be fined £60. reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days.

THE rear windows of a three- storey building in Woone Lane, Clitheroe were smashed between Friday and Monday. Damage has been estimated at £300.

CHILDREN from Langho St Leonard’s and Whalley CE Prima ry schools combined forces to raise cash for an interactive'white board at a summer fair. The main event was a football

tournament organised by Mr Adam Lakeland, of Blackburn Rovers FC. This involved seven teams from Langho and Whalley and was held at St Leonard's. The victors were the Monos, of Whalley, who played the Bad Boys, of Langho, in the final. Each team member paid £1 to

take par t and help to raise the £2,500 needed for the interactive whiteboard, the second of its kind to be installed at St Leonard’s. The rest of the fair was organised

by St Leonard’s Parent-Teacher Association and featured a bouncy castle plus an auction of goods, including a signed football from Preston North End FC. The school also had a non-uni

form day of a different kind to help towards a chocolate tombola on the day of the fair. With the theme of sport running through the event,

children went to school in sportswear and instead of paying for the privilege, donated chocolate for the tombola. PTA member Mrs Tracy Rigby,

of Brockhall Village, said: “We raised enough money at the single event for the interactive white board and we are really proud to have done it. We would also like to thank the companies who donated gifts for the auction.” Our picture shows the partici

pants in the football tournament (B110704/1)
