A month of two halves!
JUNE was a month of two ha!ves weatherwise. The first half of the month
was warm and dry with temperatures in the 70s on the 7th and 8th. It was all change from the 17th when cool wet conditions persisted to the end of the month. Heavy rain and showers, particularly on the 20th and 22nd, totalled one-and-a-half inches. Temperatures in the second
half of June never reached more than the mid 60s with cool night- time temperatures.

£1.5m. grant for school sport hall
A GRANT of £1.5 million has been secured from the Nation al Lottery New Opportunities Fund to build a new sports hall at Bowland High School. The news means that work on
the sports hall can begin on Satur day, around 18 months after the scheme was first launched .by the Grindleton school. Work on the new sports hall,
which is for school and communi ty use, has been scheduled for the next 11 months and it is hoped the new structure will be com plete by this time next year.

History of the Pals
THE part played in World War I by the Accrington Pals was described to members of Clitheroe’s Probus Club by Mr Bill Turner. Formed at the instiga
tion of the then Mayor of Accrington, John Har wood, he spent the rest of his life regretting the sor row his actions had brought to the town. The battalion, although
widely known as the Accrington Pals, had only 250 males from the town in its 1,000- strong ranks, the rest coming from sur rounding areas, such as Burnley, Great Harwood, Oswaldtwistle etc. On July 1st, 1916, 700
members of the barely- trained
volunteers
attacked the German trenches at the battle of Passchendaele. At the end of the attack,
240 men were killed and 350 were wounded, with the resulting sadness for Accrington which affected many local families. Jim Parker proposed the

AN out-of-this world com- petition soared into Clitheroe Castle Museum - with the top prize includ ing a piece of shooting star. Astronomer Dr Tim
O’Brien - of the Jodrell Bank observatory in Cheshire - selected the winner of the Design a Spaceship competition. The best entry was by
10-year-old Laura Wilkin son, of Lancaster who clinched the award with her unique “Moon Defeater” design. The prize included a
year’s free entry into every county museum, as well as
a book on astronomy, a piece of meteorite - and a piece of shooting star, or taktite. Laura’s colourful design
included a fire blaster to power the ship, a control panel, a “moon buggie”, and even lasers to shoot the aliens! Laura is a pupil at
Tatham Fell School. The competition took place at a recent talk at the muse um about Life on Other Planets by Dr O’Brien. Laura is seen receiving
her prize from museum custodian Mary Hornby. (A050604/2)
Once built, the sports hall will
be large enough to incorporate three badminton courts and asso ciated changing, storage and reception facilities on the ground floor. The second floor will provide an
area for drama, dance and fitness sessions together with a class room, small office, store room and plant room. An existing dining block will be demolished and a new two-storey teaching block built in its place. The school had to meet various criteria in order to qualify for the
funding including improvements to the school’s curriculum and that the hall is used for extra cur ricular activities by the school, other local schools and the com
munity. The scheme is being tied in with
the school’s bid for specialist sta tus to become a performing arts college. Mr Graham said he was look
ing forward to raised standards and more extra curriculum activi ties in the future. He added: "It's a nice way to finish the term!"
Golden couple celebrate their special anniversary style
A COUPLE who first met in Hurst Green and were married at Stonyhurst celebrated their gold en wedding anniversary. Gordon and Betty Wilding
were the special guests at a party held in their honour a t Alston View Nursing Home, Longridge. Both residents of the home,
they expressed their thanks to all who helped make their day extra special, family, friends, residents, staff and the Mayor and May oress of Longridge, Coun. Alan
and Mrs Kathy Coupe, who called in to extend their congrat ulations. Mrs Wilding, the daughter of
Elizabeth and Joseph Walmsley, who was a well-known black smith in the village, was a resi dent of Hurst Green when she met her husband-to-be who then played for Hurst Green Football Club. He was the only son of Charles and Elizabeth Riding, of Clitheroe. Mrs Wilding worked at Lan
caster Hosiery in Clitheroe for a number of years, while her hus band was a highways superinten dent for Lancashire County Council at the Whalley depot. Mrs Wilding's parents were for
mer licensees at the Halls Arms, Knowle Green. The couple, who have two chil
dren and two grandchildren, were given donations of £150 in lieu of flowers and they donated the money to Alston View for its resi dents' fund.
Tea at ancient hall
A PARTY of 12 ramblers enjoyed wide-ranging views on Rombald’s Moor and examined Bronze Age carvings on a walk on Saturday, July 10th, writes Jane Donnelly. The walk started from Riddlesden, near
Keighley, on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The ramblers walked east along the canal and then crossed the canal at Swine Lane
Bridge. The route then climbed up on to Rombald’s
Moor by a track to the wireless station and Cowper’s Cross. Although the day was cloudy, the cloud was high enough to give extensive views. The ramblers continued down the track
towards Ilkley and reached the Swastika Stone, which was carved by the Brigantes, who occu pied the area before the coming of the Romans. A little further along the cragside path, the ramblers stopped for lunch overlooking lower Wharfedale. After following the cragside path over
Addingham High Moor, the route turned south to the mushroom-shaped, wind-eroded Doubler Stones with cup and ring marks on their upper surfaces. The path then went downhill through fields
and woods back to the canal, where a mile of level walking brought the ramblers back to the start. Afternoon tea at East Riddlesden Hall built in 1642, made a refreshing finish to a very enjoyable day.
Remand on bail
A MAN acccused of indecently exposing him self to a female jogger in Hurst Green has appeared at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court. Damian John Paul Thompson (33), of Higher Walton Road, Walton-le-Dale, pleaded not guilty. The offence is alleged to have taken place at 8-30 a.m. in Huntingdon Hall Lane, Hurst Green, on Friday, July 2nd. Thompson was remanded on bail until August 18th.
