Everything’s coming up roses ?
PREPARATIONS are well in hand for a stunning Flower Festival to be held at Whalley Parish Church this weekend. The theme is "The School
Curriculum", and proceeds will go to Whalley CE School Building Fund. Members of Whalley Flower
Club, Whalley Parish Church flower arrangers and other vol unteers began the mammoth task of preparing almost 2,500 stems before beginning work on the arrangements. Mrs Ann Leigh, organiser, said: "This has all been so long in the plan ning, and it is very exciting to have the flowers here and to see it all becoming a reality." Sponsorship from local busi
nesses has helped with the cost of the flowers, and the staff of Oasis florists in King Street have given over 30 man hours of voluntary work in sourcing and obtaining the flowers at the best possible prices. The Vicar, the Rev. Chris
Sterry said: "Obviously any flower festival is going to have big overheads. We are very grateful to Phil Critchley and all the staff at Oasis, and to all
the other businesses who have supported us. I t is good to have such good community support for our school, and we look for ward to welcoming visitors over the weekend to see our beautiful church at its best.” The festival will be opened at
a cheese and wine reception on Friday at 7-30 p.m. by Craig Heap, international gymnast,
who has been working recently with the children of Whalley School. It will be open from 9- 30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 11-30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Pictured are members of the

Royal Lancashire Show, many lessons have been learned and, in the words of show society president Mr Rennie Pinder on Monday: "We were told that we needed to clean our act up and we started that process in September. "If we get 70% of it better than last year I will be more than

Concerns over drop in firefighter numbers
MORE retained fire fighters are desperately needed at Clitheroe Fire Station. Station Officer Dave
McGrath said this week th a t the number of active firefighters at the station had dropped to a worrying level and more local men and women are needed to serve their community. Anyone who is aged 18
to 55, with a good level of fitness and living and working within five min utes of the fire station, on Princess Avenue, can apply. Personnel are trained to the same high
standards as their full time counterparts and can be called on to deal with a wide range of emergencies, from fires to road traffic accidents. While the role of a retained firefighter is both demanding and challenging, it is also extremely satisfying. Anyone interested in
finding out more can go along to either of two open nights at the Fire Station on Monday, June 21st, and Monday, the 28th, between 6-30 p.m. and 9 p.m., or call 01254 356980 for more information.

extremely sceptical that, given more bad weather, last year's prob lems could yet be repeated, albeit on a smaller scale. "Instead of chaos, it will be organised chaos," declared one. All those involved fervently hope

Police, said that new traffic man agement structure had been based on a maximum of 20,000 people per day - 10,000 vehicles. Efforts to count the number of vehicles visit ing last year's show proved unsuc cessful, but those involved had vis ited other shows, including the Great Yorkshire at Harrogate. A new access road is currently under construction off Barker Brow, car parking has been a priority and public parking will be free. Lan cashire County Council is looking a t a regular bus service from Clitheroe and Blackburn, with part
of the De Tabley Hotel car park utilised as a "bus station" for the duration of the show from July 27th to 29th. Mr Pinder is undoubtedly a man
with a mission - to make sure that every possible structure is in place. "I couldn't walk away from this.
I felt it was my responsibility to prove to the general public that we can put a good show on," he said on Monday. "Any event on open space, particularly on grass, is open to the elements of the weather. I apologise once more for last year. Last year has been and gone. We are now looking forward to a more positive and successful show this year. "We were operating on an old
system. We couldn't operate like that. We have brought new faces in, more senior stewards. There are about 200 people in total, from the directors down to the senior stew ards and stewards. Sajjad is voted in as area’s new Euro MP
A SIMONSTONE man has been elected as the Liberal Democrats' first non-white MEP as the party doubled its North West representation in the European Parliament. Nelson solicitor Sajjad
Karim, pictured, joins Chris Davies, who said it was a great night for the party. The nine seats in the
North West were taken by: John Whittaker (UKIP), Terry Wynn, Arlene McCarthy and Gary Tit- ley (Labour), David Sum- bery, Robert Atkins and Den Dover (Conservative) Sajjad Karim and Chris Davies (Lib. Dem.) There was a 48.1%
turnout in the Ribble Val ley, with the Conservatives topping the poll with 8,665 votes, the Liberal Demo crats 2,777, UKIP 2,759, Labour 2,629, BNP 1,423, Green Party 1,110. The Ribble Valley's new
MEP Sajjad Karim com mented: “This is a victory
for democracy and plural ism. More and more peo ple in the Asian communi ties are recognising that the Liberal Democrats provide a real alternative to Labour. I hope to give a voice to many in the North West who feel their opinions have too rarely been heard in the past.” Prior to the election, Mr

A NEW Community Noticeboard has been installed outside the Yorkshire Bank in Clitheroe town centre thanks to Clitheroe the Future. Jeremy Grout-Smith,
the partnership’s chair man said: “We are delighted that we were able to provide this facili ty despite a number of set-backs and hope that the community will use it to its full potential. “We have endeavoured
to keep the design in keeping with the historic nature of the town.” Management of the
board will be the respon sibility of Clitheroe the Future Partnership work ing in close cooperation with Hyndburn and Rib ble Valley CVS. Anyone wishing to dis

Hundreds join in family vigil

MORE than 350 people packed Whal ley Parish for a special vigil of prayer in
memory of Roger Osliffe. Friends and neighbours joined relatives
during the simplistic, yet moving service, throughout which hundreds of candles were lit.
People of all ages bowed their heads in
quiet contemplation, each with their own particular memory of Mr Osliffe (35), of Green Park, who died in the operating the atre at Blackburn Royal Infirmary on June 6th following an incident at his home. Mr Osliffe, pictured, died as a result of
stab wounds and an inquest has since been opened into his death. His wife, Catherine (33), a college lecturer,
has been charged with his murder and was due to appear at Preston Crown Court yes terday. The couple had been married for just five
weeks and had returned from a honeymoon cruise just one week earlier. Last Wednesday, Mr Osliffe’s parents
issued a statement via the police. I t read: “We are stunned at the tragic loss
of a precious member of our family and a friend of so many. He will be so sadly missed by all who knew him.” The funeral is to take place a t Whalley
Parish Church next Thursday at 1 p.m., fol lowed by burial at Whalley and Wiswell Cemetery.
