CLITHEROE golfer Paul Dwyer boosted his chances of qualifying for the European Tour next season. Dwyer recorded another top 10 fin
ish on the Challenge Tour last weekend. ' And he now stands 31st in the tour
rankings - with the top 15 automatical ly qualifying for the full tour next sea son: Dwyer’s latest money-spinner came
in the Open de Volcans in France. A high-scoring first round saw him
card 76 and tie for 46th place. The second day saw an eight-stroke
improvement and Dwyer moved up to a tie for 11th before slipping back three places after carding 72. A one-under-par final round of 70
!
saw him back in the top 10 in a tie for seventh place and pocket a cheque for
€3,150. He has now won almost as much
money this season as he did all last sea son and will be hoping to produce more top 10 finishes in the second half of the season as he eyes a European Tour spot for next-summer. Danny Liles and John Jobes amassed
an incredible 51 points to win the men’s open fourball at Whalley GC. Tony Turner and Danny Blackmore
(47) were runners-up following a card play-off with Peter Brown and Kevin Walker. A field of 180 golfers contested the
James Braid open singles at Clitheroe GC on Saturday. Course chairman John Holt pro
duced the round of his season to take the Holgate Handicap Trophy with a n e t t 65 - eight under the standard scratch for the day of 73. It was a fitting outcome for Holt who
is so dedicated to providing the quality golf course that Clitheroe has become. Clitheroe’s Dave Parkinson finished
two shots behind in second place with Nelson’s Shaun Field two shots further adrift. Solid home-based golfer Jeff Crowther was well pleased with his day’s golf as a n ett 71 earned him fourth place. Young Burnley golfer Ben Scott took
a
time out from his studies a t Missouri State University to capture the South- worth Scratch Trophy from Stonyhurst Park’s Mark Young. Both carded 72s with Scott winning

event saw home players Carol Blackad- der and Shirley Palich team up with Accrington's Ann Rowbothan and Pat Catlow. And the foursome scored 89 points to
win the event. Helen Maginn carded rounds of 76
and 83 to win the Scratch Salver at Clitheroe GC while Gail Ainsworth had two rounds of 82 to win the nett award. Silver Medal prizes went to Dorothy
Dady (83-15-68), Helen Maginn (76-6- 70) and Edith Child (92-18-74) while Bronze awards were won by Carol, Cherry (106-31-75), Janet Bailey (101- 21-80) and Caroline Brown (109-25- 84). Heavy rain curtailed the junior
medal at Clitheroe GC to nine holes. Alex Alcock held his nerve to return
41-11-30 to head the leaderboard by three shots from William Child who took second spot after a card play-off with two-handicapper Andrew Bennie.

Read archers hit target for England
SEVEN members from Oakleaf Bowmen of Read travelled to Wellingborough in Bedfordshire for the IFAA UK Field Archery Cham pionships, and everyone produced a top-four finish. Each bowman shot two rounds
over two days of 28 targets, at dis tances ranging from 20 feet to 80 yards in woodland. Approximately 120 archers from
across England Scotland and Wales took part. And the local Read members fea
tured in the England team who nar rowly lost out on first place to Scot land by 50 points. However, sterling displays were
produced by world field archery champion Paul Kelly and veteran Bill Rawson, as they both won their gents’ freestyle events comprehensi bly. Pete Hollinshead also achieved
top spot in the B class archer, as well as finishing fourth in the gents’ freestyle competition. Taking second place were Helen
Kelly, in the ladies' freestyle, and Syd Bardsley in the gents' veteran ^ freestyle, before Angela Preedy and V Gloria Rawson completed a fine set of ladies' results with third and ^ fourth respectively in the freestyle. Meanwhile, Paul Kelly jets out to
Watkins Glen in upland New York w state America this week to defend his world title. Both he and his wife Helen Kelly
will be competing in the event near the Canadian border.

THREE dedicated golfers took to the fair ways at Whalley Golf Club - and stayed there for 16 hoursl The trio of Gary
Bradley, Danny Liles and Chris Summers entered the Three-Man Macmillan Challenge to play 72 holes in one day. And after four gru
elling rounds, the group have so far raised nigh on £2,000 for the chari-

assault began a t 4-30 a.m. - and after approx imately 20 miles and 350 shots, and Bradley putted the final ball at 8-30 p.m.
The event, promoted
by European Tour ace Colin Montgomerie, attracted teams from across the country. And Bradley and his
team-mates are hoping to earn a trip to St Andrews in Scotland as reward for their efforts. He said: “You take
the best stableford score from each of the four rounds and multiply that by the amount of sponsorship you have raised. “The amount then
goes into a national database, and the top three qualify for St Andrews later in the year.
♦ “So we are still look
ing for sponsorship, but we are pleased with the amount we have raised so far.” And speaking on the
gruelling schedule, he added: “Danny kept on
; talking non-stop because he kept drink ing Red Bull, so he got annoying! “But the lady captain
at Whalley caddied for us in the firs t round, and the captain caddied in the last round, so everyone got involved.” If anyone would like

Rugby star Roger hangs up his
boots
AFTER an illustrious playing career spanning 21 years - and over 500 first team appearences - Roger Holmes has announced his retirement from rugby. The Clitheroe Rugby
Club star made the shock statement a t the club’s annual dinner. An emotional Holmes
said: “The body can no longer keep pace with the mind. “And I ’ve decided i t ’s
time for the younger brigade to step into my shoes.” Starting his career back
in the days of amateur rugby, the young Holmes cut his teeth in the Clitheroe second string. It wasn’t long before the
first team selectors were knocking on his door, and over coming seasons, he made the number seven
jersey his own. Highlights of a distin
guished career included selection to the Lancashire County XV, only to with draw through injury. He was also part of the
Clitheroe team that lifted the Bagford Sevens Tro phy in three successive years back in the early 1980s. However, the Holmes
influence on the side will not disappear. Having fulfilled the role
of player-coach over the «^ past four seasons, it is the full time role of coach that will continue to occupy his time. And Holmes added:
“I ’m looking forward to my new role, i t ’s a chal lenge but one I will give 100%.”

al Jeevantha Kalatunga has put together a Sri Lankan XI to take on the rest of the world. The game, a benefit for
the popular Barnoldswick professional, takes place a week today with wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m. and admission, by programme, costing £3. Jeevantha will be joined in his team by a number of
Sri Lankan professionals from the Ribblesdale, Lan cashire and Central Lan cashire Leagues. And to test the match
scorers, his team will also feature Anil Rideegannan- agedera - the first class cricketer with the longest name in the world. The Rest of the World
team will be made up of professionals largely drawn from the Ribblesdale League, as well as several ^ leading amateur players from the Bamoldswick club.
