BRITISH drivers are still speeding, despite Government attempts to change their behaviour.

After a full decade of speed cameras, and

an estimated three million speeding tickets issued last year, the Government’s attempts to change the way we drive look to have failed. The British roads were one of the safest in

the world before speed cameras were intro duced and this is still the case today. To put this in context, we only have one road fatali ty per 140 million kilometres driven and only one fatality associated with speeding every 3.7 billion vehicle kilometres driven. Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road

safety campaign, is pleased that drivers have not become slaves to religiously following speed limits. His campaign believes that motorists should adopt a safe speed appro priate for the conditions and our safety record would seem to suggest that is just what British drivers are doing despite the increase in cameras. Mr Smith believes that speed enforcement

has lost touch with reality. The camera part nerships have not succeeded in making the roads safer, but only penalised drivers for doing exactly what is required of them to keep our road safe.

roads with quieter road surfaces. In a survey, more than 53% of people

reported that road noise affected their sleep. The Govemihent’s plans are to install quieter road surfaces over 60% of Britain’s trunk road network by 2011. It found that 84% of people reported hearing road traffic noise. While car engine noise has reduced by

more than 50% in the last 10 years, the majority of noise comes from the road caused by the friction between tyres and road sur face. New road surfacing materials can reduce the noise by four to eight decibels, the equivalent of halving the traffic.

THE RAC Foundation is calling upon the Government to get on with clear ing the backlog that exists in resurfacing our

brand equity in the 'Tigra name. When Vauxhall decided to launch a new sporty tot, there really was only one option when it came to its moniker. Virtually everything else, however, is different. Whereas the old Tigra was rather

optimistically dubbed a 2+2 coupe, the latest version is an unashamed two seater. Its profile looks much like a Peugeot 206CC to which somebody has taken a plane and chamfered all the curves into edgy angles and gives a clue as to the car’s party piece. At the press of a button, the hard

top folds into the boot, turning the little coupe into a full convertible. Everybody, it seems, is getting in on the folding hard top act, with Renault, Peugeot, Lexus, Daihatsu and Mercedes all offering vanishing tin tops and many more manufac turers lining up to introduce their own. Two engines are available, both

16-valve petrol units. The 90 b.h.p. 1.4-litre version opens proceedings

a t £13,750, with a Sport version starting at £14,500. ’The punchier 125 b.h.p. 1.8-litre car is only avail able in Sport trim and kicks off at £15,250. Versions with air condi tioning tack another £500 on to these prices. Many early coupe-cabriolet mod

els looked the part, but were cursed with woeful luggage space. This time round, the Tigra does not attempt to wedge in a pair of useless vestigial rear seats, instead offering a useful boot of 440 litres. Even with the hood cassette in place, there is 250 litres available, more

than enough for a weekend’s light luggage for two. Performance from the 1.4-litre

engine is adequate, although the weight of those electric motors will, naturally, take the edge off sprinting ability. The car will get to 60 m.p.h. in 12.2 seconds and has a top speed of 112 m.p.h. Fuel economy is very good, with a 34.9 m.p.g. economy fig ure about to\vn. The more indicative combined cycle measures 46.3 m.p.g. Opt instead for the 1.8-litre car

and the fuel economy drops quite significantly. Expect to manage around 36.7 m.p.g. on the combined

1

cycle and an unspectacular 25.9 m.p.g. in urban areas. The flipside of this is th a t performance is a lot brighter. Sixty m.p.h. in 9.2 seconds cannot be sneezed at and a top speed of 127 m.p.h. -will be plenty for most. First launched in 1994 and reborn

in 2004, the Tigra looks set to eclipse its previous success and is indicative of the progressive direction that Vauxhall is taking. Some 20% of all Vauxhall sales

will soon consist of niche models like the Tigra, a far cry from the days when Vauxhall was the brand of the photocopier salesman.
