THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (18:); The Grand Cinema; from Friday, April 30th

NO film subject is more certain to spark controversy than the life and death of Christ. It was the same with Martin Scors

ese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ” and even Monty Python’s irreverent “The Life of Brian”. But with controversy comes publicity,

lots of it and all absolutely free. And so you will already have heard much of “The Passion of the Christ”, a gripping and graphic depiction of the Easter story, directed by Mel Gibson. Better known as the star of countless

action movies, from Mad Max to Lethal Weapon, Gibson is also a devout believ er and “The Passion” is clearly a very personal enterprise for him. Its release in America has brought praise and deri sion in equal measure from the for and against camps, prompting huge audi ence numbers for a film with no big- name stars and dialogue mostly spoken in ancient Aramaic with on-screen sub titles. sy aside, there is no doubt that what Gibson has produced is a powerful and emotive motion picture. Not least the graphic portrayal of the crucifixion, lambasted by some as being too brutal. It is certainly gory - hence the 18 certifi cate - but is there any other way to por tray such a brutal act? Whether or not you are a believer, this

is a film to set you thinking and one that will stay with you.

Classic rock concert will help fire tragedy family

FOR a huge army of fans around the world, the classic line-up of Whitesnake - which recorded albums such as “Ready An’ Will ing”, “Live In The Heart Of The City” and “Come An’ Get I t” - was the definitive rock band of the late ’70s and early ’80s. The bluesy twin guitars of

Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody, together with bassist Neil Murray, are back together in a new band M3 - Classic Whites nake, to perform the songs that took Whitesnake to the stadiums of the world. The band is coming to Burnley

Mechanics for a one-off, never-to- be-repeated gig on Saturday, June 12th. The concert has been organised

to support Barry and Jayne Waddington - the parents of Louise, Hayley and Gemma who tragically died in a fire at their Padiham home in February. Former Black Sabbath singer

Tony Martin; drummer Jimmy Copley who has played with the likes of Paul Rodgers and Jeff Beck and Mark Stanway of Magnum fame, complete the line up.

Together they will be recreat

ing the classics such as “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City”, “Here I Go Again”, “Don’t Break My Heart Again”, “Lonely Days, Lonely Nights” and “Fool For Your Loving”. This date is p ar t of their

Mini Jaunt Tour which will also take in major festivals in Vienna and Hanover. Local tribute band Slack Bab-

bath will be opening the event. Quasi Washboard, Boozy Gut- full, Tony I’m Lonely and Psy cho Ward will bring you all the heavy rock classics including, “War Pigs”, “ Iron Man”, “Fairy’s Wear Boots” and, of course, “Paranoid” - just like the original Black Sabbath used to do. Tickets, costing £14 and

£12.50 concessions, are available now from Burnley Mechanics.
