Mark fires best round ever seen at Clitheroe!
by Edward Lee
MARK ASHWORTH produced the best round of golf ever seen at Clitheroe GC last week. During the course of the midweek
medal he returned an eight-under-par 63 to better the previous course record by eight shots. Ashworth’s eight birdies and 10 pars
took the record from Paul Dwyer and Daniel Preedy who set the old standard many years ago. Even so, plus-one-handicapper Ash
worth was three shots off the pace in the medal and had to be content with second spot behind Steve Cherry (81- 20-61) who won the day and earned a dramatic handicap reduction. Young Andrew Heesom was all
smiles after returning a nett 65 off his six handicap, but in the present scoring climate at Clitheroe that was only good enough for third place while Steve Dean returned a creditable 80-9-71 to finish just outside the prizes. During the same competition,
Manager Cengiz Avci, landlord Hussain Maho, chairman John Mashitcr and (front) secretary Richard Pickup with the new White Lion FC strips. (B140704/6)
Five-goal Chipping extend unbeaten run to seven games
Elswick ..................1
Chipping......................... 5 ANOTHER dominating performance by in-form Chipping made light work of a trip to Elswick last Tuesday night to extend their unbeaten run to seven games in the Cat- forth and District Summer League. After defeating Elswick
in the Billington Cup quarter-finals just two weeks ago, Chipping were confident they could con tinue their winning run in this league fixture. It was, however, Elswick
that got the better start as the home team took the game to Chipping. They took the lead early
as a corner was swung in from the right and was only half-cleared. An Elswick midfielder took a swing at the loose ball and i t somehow drifted into the top right hand corner
of the net. After this early scare
Chipping took command through Johnny Fletcher and Dave Ross and began to command the middle of the park to seek a quick equaliser. Rich Baines collected
the ball on the right and cut inside to fire in a cross shot from an acute angle which the keeper somehow spilled into the net. Then after drawing level
Chipping took the lead. . A ball played into the Elswick box caused confu sion between keeper and defender and Rich Ireland was left to turn and neatly fire home. Chipping then extended
their advantage through leading marksman Danny Austin as after a pinpoint pass from midfield, Austin controlled and, in the same movement, lifted a delicate chip over the
H H ENTRIES are now'being accepted for the H H Open Floodlit Doubles competition at Rush-
ton Street Bowling Club in September. The event is to be played between 13th-16th with
return visit on Tuesday 28th, and between 20th-23rd with return visit on Wednesday 29th. The finals night will be Friday, October 1st, and
entry fee for the event is £8 per pair. Entries are to be sent to George Ramsbottom, 23

keeper to go into the break with a well deserved 3-1 lead. The home side started
the second half strongly but were denied time and time again by the excellent Chipping defensive four of Michael Naylor, Ryan Hilton, Dean Austin and Andy Preston. And after weathering
the initial 10 minutes, Chipping again got a foothold in the game and began to press with Sam Woodhead and Austin unlucky not to extend the lead. The sides cancelled each
other out for much of the second half, but the intro duction of Shaun Spencer late in the game led to a strong finish from Chip ping. An excellent slide rule
pass from midfield sent Spencer away for his first and he easily beat the
oncoming keeper with an assured finish. His second was similar
in build up as he received a well weighted pass from midfield. However, there was nothing subtle about this finish as he thundered an effort in off the under side of the crossbar to seal the game.
New team needs new
players A NEW West Bradford Football team is forming for the forthcoming foot ball season and is request ing footballers from the local area to join. Players must be over the
age of 17 and should con tact Andy or Christine at the Three Millstones for further
information (01200423340).
PLEASINGTON professional Jonathan Ashton teamed up with Darwen’s Alan Reece to win the
latest ELPGA Alliance event on his home course. The pair scored 46 stableford points to win by two
from Mytton Fold duo Ray Standring and Mike Green who took second spot after a card play-off with Duxbury Park’s Mike Draper and R. Quinton. Clitheroe’s Stuart Andrew won the professional’s prize with a 68 gross, with Ashton runner-up with a 69.
Jonathon Dugdale and Geoff Sutcliffe grabbed their share of the headlines by scoring aces. Dugdale holed-in-one at the 172-
yard eighth and Sutcliffe followed suit at the tricky 151-yard 17th. Wayne Townley has been there or
there abouts in a number of competi tions lately. But John Cartmell and the handicap
committee were not prepared for the explosive round he produced in Satur day’s medal to win the Jubilee Plate. Townley’s return of 76-15-61 was six
shots ahead of second-placed Andrew Heesom. Mark Jones (78-10-68) took third
place from the steady Peter Pedder (79-10-69) with Miles Wade returning a nett 70 for fifth place after a card play-off with Derek Marsh, Paul Con nolly and Bill Famworth. Mark Ashworth? - who else - took the gross prize with a level-par 71.
Weather wins at Mytton
THE British summer weather once again played havoc with Mytton Fold's fixture list at the weekend. The second round of the Club Cham
pionship, scheduled to be held on Sun day, was abandoned as torrential rain turned the greens into lakes. Players will return on August 22nd
to determine the winner. The first round was held on Saturday
and was combined with the July Medal. In difficult, windy condition, Ian
Slough produced an excellent score of 80-16-64 to take the overall prize. Divisional prizes were won by Neil
Osliffe (78-12-66; Barry Hargreaves (84-18-66) and Steve Cunliffe (87-21- 66). Mytton Fold junior member Jake
Chadwick played his first representa tive game for East Lancashire last week. Playing against a very strong Fylde
Association team at Fleetwood Golf • Club, Jake played some excellent golf winning his foursomes match and halv ing his afternoon singles game. Nick Pearson and Sam Punchard
from Mytton Fold also played in the team.

‘Royal’ visit is a success!
PETER HERBERT made the trip from Royal Lytham to partner Clitheroe GC lady star Marilyn Fletch er to victory in the Invitation Mixed Greensomes. They returned a nett 65.6 to win by a
full shot. Clitheroe’s Ann Hartley and partner
J. Graham were pushed into third place by Steve Nightingale and L. Tinkler. Host club members Mary Eglin, Phil
Leaver and Som Guda took the minor prizes with their guests.
Barbara wins the day
~ BARBARA BROWN won Lady Presi dent’s Day with a round of 93-25-68. Second place went to Sue Cartledge
(87-18-69) while Kim Andrew carded 73 for the gross prize. Kath Townley (40-7-33) and Marie
Finney (43-10-33) carded the best front and back nines respectively.
Narrow win at Whalley
CAROLE BLACKADDER and Shirley Palich won the Daily Mail Foursomes Qualifier at Whalley GC. The winning pair carded 93-21-72 to
win by shot from Marilyn Bulcock and Pam Strange (103-30-73). Third place went to Agnes Flanagan and Jean Dearden (94-19-75).
William still in the grooves
WILLIAM CHILD continued his progress with a sparkling return of 95- 26-69 to win the junior medal and first round of the Summer Championship at Clitheroe GC. He finished three shots ahead of
Richard Tyrrell with Jordan Cook one shot behind in third place.
Senior league is wide open
BLACKPOOL De Vere have eventually broken their duck in the Standard Life North West Seniors Golf League. In what was their ninth match of a 14-
match season they have finally put points on the board with a splendid 5-1 home win over Mytton Fold. Other good results have included an
• away draw for Nelson a t th e home of champions Burnley keeping them right up there in the title race. Longridge suffered a setback in their
title aspirations being defeated a t Myt ton Fold 4-2.
With most teams now having played
two-thirds of their fixtures it still looks like any one of five could be taking home the trophy come September. Wilpshire, Ingol, Burnley, Longridge
and Nelson all have a realistic chance of lifting th e main prize and with the remaining fixtures throwing up some juicy matches between the contenders it all adds up to an exciting finish for the 2004 season.
