Questions about Hacking Ferry footbridge Naturalists

www.clitheroetoday.co.uk ......

-

PLANS to build a tripod-type footbridge at the site of the for mer Hacking Ferry appear to have lost impetus. Members of the Ramblers' Association have received letters informing them of a Footpath Day next month a t which the "overdue" foot

bridge will be highlighted. The ferry used to operate at

Hacking Hall, where the River Calder meets the River Ribble, just below Whalley. Ramblers hoped that a foot

bridge could be built near or at the location but, although a

bridge was designed, progress

has remained slow. The association believes that

a bridge would allow the popu lar Ribble Way to be realigned on to a route close to that origi nally envisaged. On June 26th,. ramblers are asked to meet at

either Edisford Bridge, Clitheroe, or Hurst Green. They will make their way to

the site of for a photocall, which they hope will help to persuade Lancashire County Council

. that the building of the foot bridge is long overdue.

enjoy sunny day trip out

A TOTAL of 29 members of Clitheroe Nat uralists enjoyed a trip to the Rufford area- a part of Lancashire characterised by flat rich arable fields, drained by long man made ditches. Members found it interesting to see the

variety of crops being grown and the man ner in which the farming was carried out. There was also an abundance of wildlife; flowers, birds and animals. The group took a walk of four miles

her way to super stardom --------------------------------------------—

AN expectant audience in Trinity Methodist Church Hall, Clitheroe, was not disappointed when the church drama group presented "Clinging to the Rock". The play was the first written by

the Rev. Richard Atkinson. I t was a story, the very well-

known one of Jesus’s miracles, his preaching, crucifixion, and the spreading of the Good News of his

resurrection. But these events were recounted in the form of references by those who witnessed them, as they gossiped and conversed in various locations - Rome, private dwellings, Jerusalem, by the Sea of Galilee. The strength of this play might

be seen as allowing the audience to view normal people in normal clothes expressing themselves in

including a stretch of the Rufford arm of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which is undergoing extensive renovation due to the opening up of the link across the Ribble with the Lancaster canal. A variety of birds were observed includ

ing buzzards, a sparrow hawk, reed warbler, yellowhammers and several others not often seen locally. In one of the ditches a water vole was

watched swimming and paddling along, something of a rarity in these times of so much pollution. Lunch was taken by the canal. The afternoon was spent at Mere Sands ‘

Wood, a nature reserve run by Lancashire Wildlife Trust. I t is a wildlife rich haven covering 105 acres of lakes, woodland and grassland. There is access for all including the disabled. There are six hides overlook ing the many lakes and several trails of var ied length. All manner of wildfowl were observed nesting and feeding and several other birds including jays and woodpeckers were evident. A bonus was the beautiful sunny warm

weather throughout the day, a taste of early summer.

Putting on the style!

FINAL year pupils at Clitheroe’s Ribblesdale High swopped school blazers for dinner jackets

and ball gowns at their 2004 Leavers’ Prom. Held at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors,

it celebrated five years’ hard work and friendship and was thoroughly enjoyed by 145 pupils and 30 mem bers of staff. The evening took the form of a dinner dance, with

each table voting for the Prom King and Queen and best dressed and best personality male and female pupils and staff - not an easy task, as all the guests were magnificently attired! The following prizes were awarded: Prom King and

Queen - Gary Pickup and Alice Houghton; best dressed male - Nick Hendricks; best dressed female -Vicki Eatough; best male personality - Ghulam Ramzan; best female personality - Laura Wadding- ton; best dressed male (staff) - Mr Arif Patel; best dressed female (staff) - Miss Rachel Taylor; best male personality (staff) - Mr Graham Barker; best female personality (staff) - Mrs Anne Hutchinson. All the Year 11 pupils expressed thanks to the staff

who organised and supported the event, an evening they will remember for years to come. Our picture, shows some of the 2004 leavers prepar

ing for their prom night. (B050504/8a, top, and 8b, left)

normal 21st Century language,. But they are describing how

they are witnessing shattering and world-changing events which the audience knows happened 2000 years ago, and culminated in the formation of the Christian Church. I t is to be hoped that this well-

crafted play becomes part of the repertoire of many such Christian drama groups.

THERE was a virtuoso performance from Thulani Kumalo, a Year 1 pupil at Oakhill

College in Whalley. Thulani (six) is making her mark in the

world of dance as a consequence of her per formance in recent examinations. Last month she took her primary ISTD ballet exam, gaining a distinction with an

outstanding score of 86 %. She had only been studying the syllabus for

a year and took the exam after attending extra coaching classes for the six weeks run

ning up to the event. Thulani has been a pupil at East Lancs

School of Dancing (based in Colne) for the last two years and studies classes in ballet,

modem, tap and acrobatics. Her dance teacher, Miss Claire Slater, com

mented; “Thulani worked very hard and has achieved a very high standard for someoneso young and should be very proud of herself.
