which is in the West Yorkshire dis trict of the Methodist church. Originally from Radcliffe, near
Bury, Mr Atkinson, accompanied by his wife, Louise, and two chil dren, Ben and Frances, took up his post in the Ribble Valley in 1998 after serving for five years in the ministry in Nottingham. During his time here, he has
served on the board of the Trinity Community Partnership and has been chairman of the Clitheroe Churches in Partnership ecumenical group, as well as chaplain a t the local community hospital. Determined to be a big part of
the community, he has always been, actively involved in strengthening community relations throughout the town and last year met Muslim leaders outside the Medina Islamic Education Centre to exchange copies of the Quran and the Bible. He took this step to highlight a
literal and a symbolic exchange between the local churches and the local Islamic community. Sad to leave the Ribble Valley,
but looking forward to putting his teaching skills to good use, he said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and with the help of cer tain key members, I have tried to
A day full of surprises as 90th birthday is celebrated in style
THERE were tears of joy when “Happy Birthday” was sung to Mrs Margaret Ashby at her recent 90th birthday. Mrs Ashby (known as Peggy)
was surrounded by colourful bal loons, cards, presents and three generations of her family when staff at Manor House Nursing Home in Chatburn arranged the much-awaited party. Mrs Ashby, who was born in
Caracas in Venuezuela in 1914, moved1 to Wimbledon with her family at the age of seven. Her childhood memories include
going with her friends to the site where Heathrow Airport was being built. “That was a very exciting time for us all," she said. “I can vividly remember how
my friends and I were filled with excitement when the planes took off.” Mrs Ashby lived in Wimbledon
until six years ago when she moved to Clitheroe so she could he near her daughter, Pat, who lives in Waddington. A fortnight ago, Mrs Ashby went to Manor House Nursing Home and is enjoying liv ing there very much. Speaking on the major contrast
from city life to country life, Mrs Ashby who enjoys painting and drawing, said: “When I first
moved to the Ribble Valley, it took me some time to get used to how quiet it was. “Although all my friends are in
London, I have adapted well to liv ing in the picturesque borough. It certainly is the most beautiful place in the country.” Mrs Ashby received two surpris
es on her birthday - one a visit by the Ribble Valley’s sprightly 86- year-old Mayor Coun. Charles Warkman, who will celebrate his 90th birthday in four years time. Her second surprise was a visit
from her son, Simon, and his family who travelled all the way from Australia.

build significant bridges between faiths. “My family and I have found
people throughout the borough very friendly, supportive, open-minded, typical Lancastrians and we will leave with very fond memories. “I am sad to leave, but everyone
has to move on in life and with this in mind, I am looking forward to teaching in Bradford.” A farewell service is to be held at
Trinity Methodist Church on Sun day and a large congregation from local churches is expected to give the family a memorable send-off from the Ribble Valley.
Charged with affray after football match
A BILLINGT0N man is among eight defendants charged with affray after an inci dent in a Blackburn pub following the Blackburn Rovers vs Manchester United match on May 1st. Derek Roberts (38), of Billington Gardens, Billington, appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged in connection with the incident at the Postal Order pub, in Darwen Street. Prosecutor Mr Francis Mclntee said
between 50 and 60 Manchester fans had been in the pub and had clashed with a sim ilar number of Blackburn supporters. He said the scene that greeted police was
like something from a mid west movie. All eight defendants were ordered to stand
trial at Preston Crown Court after some of them elected to have their cases heard there. They were all remanded on bail until
August 25th. The other seven are Lee Mason Newall (35), of Westhoughton; Andrew Broad (37), of Baxenden; Ian Mark Taylor (25), of Oswaldtwistle; Sean Flaher ty (35), of Blackburn; Andrew Watson (33), of Lower Darwen; Terrence Robert Watson (45), of Blackburn; and Daniel Robert Sharman (18), of Nelson.
