Sports Desk Winning quartet
CLITHEROE Dolphins hosted a Micro League Gala at Ribblesdale Pool recently and managed to finish run ners-up behind Southport. The locals scored 127 points to the victors' 172 in the
third of a series of four galas. Following on behind in third were Garstang who finished with 97 points and Ormskirk in fourth with 92 points. In the end Clitheroe won nine of the 49 events as four
individuals excelled on the day. Kara Singleton, Hayleigh Jones and Thomas Carter
all did particularly well to win two events apiece. Kara produced fine finishes in the 11-year-old back-
stroke and breaststroke while Hayleigh did equally as well in the 12-year-old girls butterfly and freestyle. Thomas then out performed all the other 10-year-old
boys when he won both the backstroke and freestyle. And completing the individual achievements was nine-
year-old Isaac Banki-Williamson who won the back- stroke.
There were also two team wins for the Under 11 girls
and the Under 9 boys as they respectively won their medley relay races.
toria Rodgers and Eleanor Burrill all combined forces to claim victory points while the boys team saw success with James Addison, Benedict Swift, Isaac Banki- Williamson and Harry Crossley. Two Clitheroe Dolphins swimmers have also qualified for the Inter Association competitions which saw swim
mers from Cumbria to the North midlands compete for places Kara Singleton put in a qualifying time of 42.67 sec
onds to finish second in the 50m breaststroke as well as producing a personal best time of 33.03 to finish fourth in the 50m freestyle. She also finished sixth in the 50m backstroke with a time of 38.18. The Dolphins' other qualifier was Megan Philip who
recorded 2 minutes 57 seconds in the 200m butterfly and 3 minutes 3 seconds in the 200m breaststroke and achieved fourth place in the 100m butterfly with a time of lminute 15 seconds.

A TOTAL of 199 competitors took part in Clitheroe GC’s Captain’
s.Day and former captain Peter Clayton proved to be the top man by winning the presti gious prize. Captain Ray Ashley showed his
delight when presenting Clayton with his Claret Jug as they are lifelong friends and keen Clarets supporters. The pair both played golf at Glen
View before moving down the Valley to the Clitheroe club a number of years ago. Clayton’s 76-10-66 was matched by
Steven Nightingale, but scrutiny of the cards gave Clayton top spot. Steve Dean lost a wheel off his golf
trolley on the first hole, much to the merriment of playing partners Archie Moro and Peter Harrison, but the lat ter regained his composure to take third spot with 74-7-67. Dean also recovered well to card a
nett 68 for fifth place with Paul Hamer and James. Jackson also showing remarkable form with nett 68s. Division Two saw David Knowles
just one shot off the winning score of 79-14-65 posted by
a.determined John Willis. Roy Wood was delighted to return a 67 for third spot with Nigel Schofield and John Fox just one shot behind. Mark Ashworth took the gross prize
with a 70 to highlight the form that has earned him selection for Lancashire while Andrew Walmsley produced the shot of the day when, after a solid drive at the 447-yard 12th hole, he holed a seven-wood for an eagle two. Phillip Walmsley was the popular
winner of the invitation day when he partnered Whalley’s Geoff Stanley to

away winner of the Jane Panter Shield at Clitheroe GC. She carded 97-32-65 to win by seven
shots from Trudy Walne (100-28-72) with Sylvia Bowden (109-36-73) in third place. Julie Stephenson took the Mary
Lightfoot Trophy a t Whalley Golf Club, after carding 94-27-67. Fran Gierat was second (97-27-70),
while a round of 93-21-72 was enough to earn Jean Dearden third spot. Brogan Cook showed good form in
the junior medal at Clitheroe GC with a round of 95-27-68, proving she is not intimidated by the big-hitting junior boys.

Injury halts tennis progress
AFTER last week’s record-
' breaking feat of victories all round for Clitheroe’s open, mixed and junior teams', it was a back to earth with a bump this week. The most unfortunate
story of the weekend belonged to the title-chas ing junior A team who faced Towneley B, and had regular pairings Will Aspinall with Josh Black, and Andrew Hartley with Matt Hanson, brimming with confidence. And the match began
. brightly for Clitheroe until •Aspinall had to retire
’ through sickness. The opposition were gift
ed all four points, which placed even more pressure on Clitheroe’s second pair. As usual, Hartley and
Hanson approached the game with a mixture of excellent passing shots and good net work, with Han son in particular firing in hard first serves to cause the opposition no end of misery. They fought hard and won three out of their
! four sets, collecting three : vital points. Elsewhere the junior B
team completed their sea son with two matches. Against Burnley B they
ran out comfortable win ners by 7-1 as Mark Hig- son and Matthew Cornish enjoyed an uneventful morning’s work, while Jen nifer Holgate and Emma Calvert teetered on the brink of defeat in no less than three of their sets, but managed to pull them back to win them all. Then on Sunday against
a powerful and much older Parkwood outfit, Jack Dewhurst, Richard Bell, Dominic Parrott and Liam Bedford were outplayed and suffered a 8-0 reverse. The mixed A team fared
no better against Whalley but when Mr Reliable, Tony Bush, served errati cally and there was nothing his partner Mary Brass or the second pairing of Louise Burrill could do to turn things around as Whalley ran out easy 6-2 winners. The B team travelled to
Burnley and prepared to face the worst as they squared up to the talents of their own coach, Iain Tay lor and his Towneley team mates.

Daniel Bush took an early 4-0 lead over their counter parts but unfortunately for the locals it wasn’t long before their opponents gathered momentum, and took the game 6-4,6-3. Meanwhile Trish Proc
tor and Mick Dewhurst faced Taylor and his Amer ican partner and struggled to come up with an answer to the coach’s fierce serving display, going down 3-1. And despite taking one
set to a tie break in the return rubbers, the Clitheroe team came home empty-handed, but with their pride intact. With the open A team
enjoying a weekend off, it was left to the B team to try and salvage some pride this week for the senior teams against Parkwood B. However they failed in
their mission despite Barry Taylor and Peter Bell com ing back well to win their second rubber in hopelessly exposed, gusty conditions. But Russell Shiels and
Neil Gunn were left firing blanks, leaving Parkwood to wrap up a comfortable victory.
Whalley’s mixed fortunes
LAST weekend yielded mixed fortunes for Whal- ley’s teams as the A side played Sunnyhurst and lost 3-1. The number one pairing
of Andrew Moore and Richard Lambert made a good s ta r t by winning their first rubber 7-5, 6-4 playing some great tennis only to concede the second rubber 6-2,7-6. Unfortunately Danny
Roff and Gerry Breese lost their two matches with the second being a tight three setter. But After last week's
defeat the second team bounced back to defeat Accrington B in some style. The Whalley first string
of Mathew Cuynes and Guy Purves won both their matches with the loss of only three games, including a whitewash of the Accrington second pairing. David Walters and
Andrew Cuynes won their first match in fine style 6- 1, 6-1 and the second I match had to be conceded following an injury to David Walters. The third team's match
against Crow Wood was postponed for two weeks.

J THE Cobras under 11s I A side made light work 1 of beating Padiham 1 with some fine bowling I this week by taking 12 I wickets in all. I Batting first the I locals made steady I progress with the pick 1 of the batting being I Banks (10), Dent (12) 1 and Nuttall (15). I Le-Breton (25) then ! capped off a competent I batting performance I and Clitheroe finished on 92.

ness proving to bowl as well as ever he was the only player not to take
1 a wicket. | However Le-Breton, | with some excellent | flighted off-spin, took three wickets, Dent and
j Nuttall two wickets a piece, and then Glover, Banks and Ramsden all chipped in with a wick et each. Wicket keeper Walsh
behind the sticks made a brilliant stumping and there was a direct hit run out by Nuttall. As a result of the Cobras fine bowling and fielding Padiham never got anywhere near the Clitheroe total and the Chatburn Road side ran out winners by 87 runs.
Thrilling win extends
great run CHATBURN Seconds had a thrilling four run victory over Sandy Lane to continue their recent good results. The locals batted first
and scored 178-7 after the allotted overs and there were good contri butions from Mark Braithwaite (32), Dave Lakin (31) and Ted Topham (23). A stand of 56 a t the
end of the innings between Geoff Lambert (43) and Steve Braith waite (14 not out) gave the score respectability. In reply Sandy Lane
were always up with the asking rate but in the end fell an agonising four runs short. Credit goes to the
Chatburn bowlers though for their perse verance in difficult cir cumstances. The wicket takers
were Stephen Braith waite 4-44, Geoff Lam bert 2-30, Russell Braithwaite 1-35 and Aamar Zulfi 1-59.

A FANTASTIC unbeaten century from paid man Shahid Nawaz got Ribblesdale Wanderers’ season back on track on Saturday. Just four wins from their open
ing nine outings had seen the Church Meadow outfit slip into mid-table obscurity. But this knock from Nawaz
could just be the catalyst for a Wanderers revival, as has so often been the case over the past six years.
Now in his seventh season with
the club, Nawaz smashed 14 fours and six sixes on his way to 120 off the same number of balls - two thirds of his sides total score. Chasing Edenfield’s 176 after
bowling out the visitors, Craig Hall was trapped in front by Liam Bones for an unlucky 13-ball duck, while Martin Peel went for five. But it was David Howard who
did the business alongside Nawaz, as he ably supported his profes sional.
The side passed the target with
seven wickets intact, and with just under five overs in hand. Earlier in the day, Nawaz had
taken 3-40 after dismissing three of the top order.
But this time he was upstaged
by Howard, who too 4-45 including the dangerous Edenfield profes
sional Adam Webb. Greg Smithson was first to go
after he was run out through a direct hit by Nawaz, before Craig Hanson was trapped in front. Keith Roscoe fell to a diving
catch in the deep by skipper Terry Braithwaite, and despite the pro being dropped by Hall, he was picked up low down by Nawaz at slip. Braithwaite then decided to go
for the bonus points, putting on leg spinner Stephen Kerr. And he failed to disappoint, as
Brett Storey top-edged to Ryan Gladwin a t point before Steven Bulcock hit one straight to Briggs at deep mid wicket. And after Dominic Bulcock was
bowled off the final ball of the innings, Wanderers romped home to take the spoils. The following day saw Wander
ers entertain Manchester outfit Shadoos in the Thwaites LCB Knockout. And it was a similar story, as the
locals romped home by 94 runs. After electing to bat, Wanderers
found themselves in trouble as Peel went for one and Dewhurst for seven. But Nawaz was again in omi
nous form as he raced to 37 before mistiming a pull shot to be caught
on the boundary edge. Howard went for two to leave
Wanderers reeling a t 59-4, but Briggs and Marsh put them back into the game with marvellous stand of 122 in 21 overs. Briggs faintly edged to the keep
er after passing his 50 in 68 balls, but Marsh stayed around to help his side past the 200 mark. Kerr and John Braithwaite then
struck then hit 17 off 13 balls and 12 off eight balls to take the hosts to a commanding 232-7. Shadoos made their intentions
clear as Rana went on the offensive against Ian Britcliffe. But a change of bowling reaped
dividends, as Howard had him caught on the boundary for 28. Akram and Sami made 23 and
35 respectively, but after both had fallen with the score on 97-4, their chances went with them. Kerr ended with figures of 4-16
off 3.3 overs, while John Braith waite ended with total figures of 3- 1-3-2. And all that contributed to their
visitors skittled for 138, with the final six wickets falling for just 21 runs. Wanderers are back in league
action on Saturday when they travel to Blackburn Northern.
Zero to hero! Smash and grab!
HAVE you ever hud (hat feeling when you want the ground fo open up and swallow you? Well if you haven’t, ask Neil Bibby what if feels like. The weigh! of (he world must have been piled high
onto his shoulders, after a solitary mistake on Saturday. With hosts Padiham batting, professional Kasif Sid-
dique, then on 31, got an outside edge and lofted (lie ball straight to Bibby at cover.
In the words of skipper Neil Bolton, it was “a routine
dolly catch”. But after the ball had slipped through his fingers, Siddique made him pay. Bibby could only watch in disbelief as the Arbories paid man went on to make 181 off just 108 balls, with 10 fours and 17 sixes! And the home side’s final total of 31G-9 was not only
their highest-ever Ribblcsdale League score, but the third highest of ail time!
He helped put on 141 for the second wicket alongside
Michael Hawke - who incidentally was caught behind by Simon Coulter third ball only for the umpire to wave away the appeals before he went on to make 60! From 281-1, Padiham fell to 316-9 as the tail-end
failed to build on the foundations set by Siddique. But if he had stayed at the crease, the game would
undoubtedly have sec the league innings record broken for the second time in the space of a week. In reply, skipper Neil Bolton fell early on having
notched just four, before Andrew Kenyon and profes sional Craig Thysscn set about the target. They put on 71 before the former holed out to Gary
Hall, before Thyssen fell moments later to Hawke. But after Simon Coulter had departed for two, Steve
Whalley and Mark Bolton once again started to repair the damage. Both looked on course for (heir half cen turies before falling five and four runs short respectively. And with the tail-end again offering little resistance,
the visitors eventually crumbled to 189 all out. However, despite Saturday’s goings on, Bibby was to
emerge the hero from Sunday’s LCB Knockout clash with Little Hulton.
He ended with figures of 3-10 from nine overs, as he
removed three of the top four batsmen before they had chance to break into their stride. Mark Hargreaves also ended the day with three wickets, as he followed Bibby’s lead by cleaning up the middle order. And with Thyssen chipping in with two of his own, the
home side were eventually skittled for just 109. It took the locals just over 23 overs to knock of the
required runs, and with Stephen Bishop the only casual ty. He fell on 34, but his replacement Kenyon - along side half centurion Thyssen - reached their target with nine wickets in hand. This weekend sees them entertain Great Harwood on
Saturday.
GREAT Harwood’s Crook produced a smash-and-grab raid to send Whalley spiralling to defeat on Saturday. Professional Andrew Crook took 7-4G as lie cleaned out
Hie locals’ middle order. And that was all after Whalley had given themselves a
fighting chance on more than one occasion to lift themselves off the foot of (lie VEKA Rihlilcsdule League. With Padiliam overcoming Clitheroe at (lie Arbories, a
defeat would have left Mark Whelan’s side adrift at the bot tom.
And despite bowling out the home side to collect the (wo
bonus points for the first time this season, they eventually crumbled to a 39-run reverse. It was all going so well for the men from Station Road, as
after removing Russell Whalley with (he final ball of the first over, Chris Jackson also fell without scoring to leave the hosts on 2-2.
Paul Houldsworth came to the middle alongside Crook
and put on 50 for the third wicket until the paid man fell for 32. Houldsworth himself fell just one run later, and at 53-4, the signs were looking good. But it was to be Allan Armer who would do the damage,
. starts either. Martin Davies went for five, before Lee Kearsley (8),
Mark Whelan and Simon Gorton take the game to Har wood.
The pair thrashed 19 boundaries between them-includ- 1 ing two sixes - before Gorton advanced too far and was
stumped by Ian Threlfall to become Crook’s fourth victim 1 of the afternoon for 29.
