GETTING your wooden windows in tip-top condi tion will not only stop them rattling and letting draughts in during the cold, blustery months, it will also give them a new lease of life for spring and summer when you'll want to have them open. Wet rot can be a major

problem, especially with painted softwood windows. Cracked . paint gives it chance to set in by letting water to seep into the wood beneath. You know your wood's in a bad way if it feels soft and spongy and can easily be penetrated by the point of a sharp knife. Act quickly to stop rot in

its tracks because otherwise it will spread and cause seri ous damage. A proprietary repair kit is what you need for this job - namely a spe cial resin hardening agent and a ready-mixed wood filler. Use a chisel to get rid of

as much rotting wood as you can and then brush on the hardening agent, leaving it to dry thoroughly. Take some filler and press firmly into the hole so the surface is a little raised compared to the surrounding area. Once fully set, sand the filler down so it looks like part of the wood. Paint over it for protection. Rainwater can also pene

trate wooden frames and glazing bars if the putty is cracked or missing and prompt action is needed on this front too if you spot any problem areas. Go for acrylic putty

rather than the traditional linseed oil type and buy a putty knife to help you achieve a smooth and pro fessional finish. Take an old wood chisel

or broad-based screwdriver and chip out the failed putty making sure you avoid damaging the wood in the process. Dab on acrylic primer or undercoat to any bare wood tha t has been exposed and give it time to dry thoroughly. Fill the space between the

glass and woodwork with a bead of putty and press well in. Smooth it down with the blade of your putty knife

and work into a 45-degree angle. At the corners, form neat

mitres, then take a dry paintbrush all the way along the putty's surface to

bond it smoothly to the glass. It usually takes around 14

days for putty to become fully hardened at which point it needs a lick of paint. Try and take the paint right up to the surface of the glass so it forms a waterproof seal. If you don't have a very steady

hand, use masking tape to help you get a straight line. Draughts and water can

also get in if there are gaps between window frames and the surrounding masonry. Small ones can be filled with non-setting frame sealant, which is sold in cartridges in a choice of white or brown, so you can match it to your woodwork. The bead of sealant needs

to be a little wider than the gap you want to fill, so cut the nozzle with this in mind, then fit the cartridge into the application gun. Gently squeeze the trig

ger to get the sealant flow ing and pipe it along any gaps you have found. If nec essary, dip your finger in some water and use it to smooth the sealant down as you go along. For wider gaps, an aerosol

foam filler is the best option because it sinks right in and expands to fill the gap. Keep squeezing the foam until it overflows above the surface a little but don't worry if you overdo it at first, because once it's set, the excess needs to be cut off anyway. For a neat finish, trim

and smooth the foam as level with the surrounding surface as you can, then paint over it to match the woodwork.

‘Fitted as standard,' is a phrase that Volkswagen owners are becoming increasingly familiar with. After all, we're talking about the car that is the safest ever tested by Euro NCAP to date. It’s not surprising given that it has six airbags and has practically every safety feature you can think of. It also boasts such goodies as a 6-speaker radio/CD player, and door mirrors with integrated indicators. So it's perhaps not such a great surprise, that climatic air conditioning has now joined the seemingly endless list of features included with the Golf.
