TWO members of Pendleside Soroptimists have received certificates marking their 50 years’ service to the organisa

tion. Miss Betty Bennett and

Miss Josie Stansfield were among several members who were honoured for service of between 25 and 50 years at the movement’s annual meet ing at Colne Golf Club. Around 40 members of the

club, which covers Pendle and the Ribble Valley, attended the meeting and heard encouraging reports from offi cials. Outgoing president Mrs

Sue Biggs handed over the chain of office to her succesor, Mrs Tricia Cunliffe. Pictured is Mrs' Cunliffe

Hall, Burnley, is to be dedicated to the memory of tragic Burnley BMX fan James Hadfield (15), who died after a cycling accident last month. Simonstone man Mr Anthony

Ramsey (33), who is setting up Interact Skate Park with neigh bour, Mr Steven Langford, said: “Everyone will be wearing a helmet here and safety will be paramount. “There will be strict health and

safety guidelines and CCTV to monitor people using the park to make sure they are safe.” Mr Ramsey, who has been a

BMX fan since the age of 12, said: “I want to ride my bike and work with young people - this job will link all that together!” The ambitious £250,000 scheme

has been three years in the plan ning, with Mr Ramsey scouring the area for a suitable central location in Burnley and he has worked with

a team of top skateboarders, moun tain bikers and BMX professionals to design the facilities and ramps. “The building was used as stor

age before big fires over a year ago,” said Mr Ramsey, who has secured help from Michelin Development Fund, the North West Develop ment Agency, Lancashire County Council, the Department of Trade and Industry and Halifax Bank of Scotland for the unique scheme. Up to five new jobs will be created. Facilities will include both

20,000 square foot interior and exterior skate parks as well as ramps and jumps covering a fur ther 10,000 square feet, a trails area for mountain bikes and BMX and a trials area for mountain bikers using old tree trunks and telegraph poles. There will also be an Internet

cafe and games area, VIP area, training suite and shop stocking equipment, clothing and acces sories. A film, photography and DVD production centre will also be based on site. There will be facili ties for fishing on the nearby Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Tapsell ff West Married to former Read resident,

Michelle, Mr Ramsey is father to Thomas (12), Millie (six) and Georgia (five) and previously worked with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. He is already working with the

youth and community service and Burnley College to throw open the doors of the skate park to skate boarders and bike fans from all backgrounds and abilities. “The park will be open from 10

a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, and will be open to people of all ages,” said Mr Ramsey. “We are already planning major events, attracting 3,000 to 4,000 people.” He said he was working with

local businesses and suppliers, including On Yer Bike Cycles and hopes to involve local schools too. For the grand opening he has big

plans for a visit by an American professional BMX team, as well as special membership offers. Our picture shows Mr Ramsey

and Mr Langford preparing to set up the skate park. (B220404/2a)
