Dramatic quarry rescue as man tumbles from a digger

THERE was a dramatic rescue at lunchtime on Monday following an accident at a remote Ribble Valley
quarry. A 34-year-old man was flown to Royal
Preston Hospital following the accident in which he fell from a mechanical digger on
to the ground. The patient escaped with a badly frac
tured ankle. The North West Air Ambulance was
scrambled from its base in Blackpool and pilot Shaun Tinkler Rose was able to fly the helicopter right into the middle of the quarry at Waddington, just yards from the scene of the accident. A land ambulance was already on the
scene and assisted air ambulance paramedics to put the patient on board the aircraft. He was then flown to hospital in just six

that the North West Air Ambulance has come to the aid of Ribble Valley accident
victims. The service, which receives no Government funding, operates seven days a week, 365 days a year. It does not qualify for lottery grants and has to find £65,000 each and every month to keep the heli copter airborne, covering an area stretch ing over 5,500 miles, with a population of seven million people. Bright stripes for low danger bridge

A WHALLEY bridge has been painted yellow and black in a bid to reduce on the number of acci dents in the village. And the move has been welcomed
by the villagers who have had to put up with years of tall vehicles striking the bridge. Network Rail, which maintains
the country’s railway infrastructure, decided to paint the arch of the Vic torian stone bridge in Mitton Road, to reduce the number of accidents. Resident Mrs Patricia Morley,
who lives very close to the bridge in Broad Lane, has witnessed a number of serious accidents in the area. She now hopes the new brightly-
coloured paint work will alert drivers. She said: “Every other week the
bridge is hit by lorries.and since the construction work started at Calder- stones Park, I have noticed an increase in traffic in the area. In fact at times it is like a motorway! “Perhaps I would have preferred
the bridge to have been painted black and white as that would be in-keep ing with Whalley. “However, if the colours used
assure greater visibility for passing motorists, then I think it is a great idea.” A similar opinion was expressed by
borough and Whalley parish council lor, Coun. Joyce Holgate. She said: “If the bridge has been painted for safety reasons, then I
think it is a brilliant move. However, I think the situation should be moni tored over a six-month period.” Commenting on the new initiative,
a spokesman for Network Rail, said: “We never go and paint a bridge with bright colours unless we think it is necessary. “There have been accidents in '
Mitton Road in the past and hope fully this will stop them in the future. “When a vehicle hits the bridge, all
trains running over it have to be stopped and the bridge thoroughly inspected by the engineers. “This obviously causes a lot of dis ruption for the motorists and passen

A NOKIA mobile phone and a black wal let were stolen from a Volvo estate some time last week. Thieves smashed the
passenger side window of the black vehicle parked in a Clitheroe car park and made off with the goods valued at £72.

Treasure hunt gets the thumbs up
A STAR-STUDDED Christmas treasure hunt has benefited two local primary schools - with prizes of nearly £600. Teams of pupils had the task of discover
ing how many stars were hidden in the win dow displays of 58 shops around the centre
of Clitheroe. To win, the teams had to have the nearest
guess to the correct number of stars. The annual event, which is run by the
Chamber of Trade and Commerce, also asked each shop to donate £10 towards the
prize money. Cheques were presented to the winning
schools at the Mayor’s parlour, and the Deputy Mayor of Clitheroe, Coun. Allan
Knox, was present. Pictured are pupils Claudia Nurse, from
