Ruth is a STAR and has the award to prove it!

by Faiza Afzaal

CHAMPAGNE corks have been popping at Wiswell- based Pepper Hill bed and breakfast establishment after proprietor Mrs Ruth Collinson was announced a winner in the first Skills in Tourism Awards for Region al Success (STARS). The 62-year-old, acc

ompanied by her daughter, Rachael, attended the Oscar- style ceremony at Manchester’s Renaissance Hotel, where she scooped the “Excellence in Customer Service Award” for frontline staff members dealing directly with the public. Around 170 guests enjoyed a

glittering reception, where more than 150 companies, including managers, profession als and employees from the North-West’s tourism industry, were represented and 50 nomi nees competed in 12 award cat egories. The 12 lucky winners,

including Mrs Collinson, were each presented with a specially- commissioned glass award and a certificate by former BBC TV presenter Felicity Goodey. Mrs Goodey, also chairman

of the recently-established North West Tourism Forum, said: “People used to laugh at the idea of tourism in this region - ‘it rains’ - they’d say. “Well, I have discovered it

actually rains more in Sydney, Australia, than it does in Manchester! “Rain or shine, the truth is

tourism is booming in the region and it is set to become one of our most important industries in the future.” Mrs Collinson is not new to

collecting silverware. Earlier this year, the talented grand mother walked away with a trophy in the first Lancashire Excellence in Tourism Skills Award - once again for excel lence in customer service. Commenting on her recent

success, Mrs Collinson, said: “I am extremely delighted. My daughter, Rachael, nominated me, but I had no idea that I would win again.” Following the success of last

week’s event, plans are already afoot for an even bigger and better celebration of the

region’s tourism STARS next vear. when it. is tin ne d th a t th e

function will become one of the most-prestigious industry events m the social calender.

Pupils make the past come to life

by Rebecca Wright

HAND-CRAFTED shields and spears made history come alive for pupils at their Roman Re-enactment Day. The Year 3 class at

Whalley CE Primary School worked for months to create the unique shields and then presented them in a series of defence forma tions at a special school assembly. They then dis played cross-sections of Roman roads they had

made and also explained what food the Romans ate and what clothes they wore. The pupils also had eight

weeks to complete special. projects, on topics such as Roman roads or the Roman invasion.

Mr Drew Spencer, the

class teacher, said: “The work they have put into the projects and shields is phenomenal, they all did really well. “They have learned so

much from doing history lessons in a practical way.” The pupils worked in

pairs to create the symmet rical shield designs using steam pudding basins, cardboard mid paint - repli cating a black and white historical picture of the Romans using the shields in battle. Teaching assistant for

art and design technology, Mrs Christine Holgate, helped them to design and make their shields. Headteacher Mr Brian

Beresford said: “The assembly was a great chance for the children to show off all their efforts. It was absolutely brilliant. “The parents have also

worked very hard with the children at home helping them with their projects.” (CR010704/3)

Clarets’ Bertie Bee pays a visit

FANATICAL footballers from St James’ CE Primary School were able to show off their fancy footwork with the help of two talented footballers. Star Premiership striker Brett Ormrod,

who plays for Southampton, visited the school in Greenacre Street, Clitheroe. He spent the entire day signing auto

graphs and answering many questions that the youngsters fired at him about the life of a footballer. The children also took part in a similar

event to raise money for the school with the help of Burnley Football Club and their mascot, Bertie Bee. Throughout the day, they had to kick

penalties - looking for speed and accura cy.

The eventful day rounded off by Bertie

demonstrating his footy techniques and visiting the keen young footballers in their classrooms. Year 4 pupils are pictured with Bertie. (A110604/1)

Pensioner found guilty of ‘systematic child abuse’

A GRANDFATHER has been found guilty of sys tematically abusing two children over a period of 16 years by a jury at Preston Crown Court. The jury took two-and-

a-half hours to find Her bert George Bridges (69) guilty after a four-day trial. Although Bridges lived

in Cross Street, Clitheroe, the offences of rape, inde cent assault and gross inde cency took place in Burn ley and Padiham. He has been remanded in

custody and will be sen tenced for two rapes, 11

counts of indecent assault and one charge of gross indecency on Friday, July 30th. . During the case, prosecu

tor Mr Mark Lamberty told the jury that the two female victims had been abused from the age of five. The case was the first to

be investigated by the new Accrington-based East Lancashire Public Protec tion Unit, which opened in October last year. Delighted with the ver

dict, the head of the PPU, Det. Insp. Neil Hunter, said: “This conviction rep

who robbed woman POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a group of men went through the handbag of an elderly woman in her own home in broad daylight. The woman was sitting

in her home on Salthill Road at 2-15 p.m. on Fri day when three men walked in and went through her handbag making off with cash and other items. Clitheroe Police Insp.

Bob Ford said the victim, who is hard of hearing and

has poor eyesight, could only watch helplessly as the incident unfolded. The three men are

described as white and around 5ft. 7in. One of the men is thought to have had a Liverpudlian accent. Insp. Ford stressed the importance of good security at all times, particularly for vulnerable people. Anyone with informa

tion about the incident should call Clitheroe police on 01200 443344.

resents a success as the community is now protect ed from this man. “His crimes were a cata

logue of horrendous abuse against the most vulnera ble members of society. “It has been a very diffi

cult inquiry and one which has required sensitive han dling, given the ages of the witnesses and them having to give evidence in the trial. “We have had to work

very carefully with the girls and their family members to find out what happened to them and gather the necessary evidence.”

Could you help ?

IF you are at a loose end and feel you can help a worthwhile cause, why not give up a few hours to help staff at Clitheroe’s Citizen Advice Bureau? Situated in Parson Lane,

staff at the bureau are looking for volunteers who can offer a minimum of six hours every week in order to keep the valuable service open five days a week. Full training will be provid

ed and, in return, volunteers will be able to have fun and at the same time gain rewarding experience. Anyone interested is asked

to contact Mrs Shirley Wall- bank on 01200 428966.
