THE sun shone on the third and final day of the Royal Lancashire Show, attracting thou sands of visitors and ensuring it returns to the Salesbury Hall Farm site once again next year. Chairman of the Royal Lancashire Agricultur
al Society Mr Rennie Pinder confirmed that soar ing temperatures on Wednesday and especially Thursday attracted thousands of visitors, but that despite this year’s success, a fewproblems were identified, which need addressing before next year’s show. “Everything seems to have worked extremely
well,” said Mr Pinder, of Altham. “ I t has certain ly been more successful than last year. “We were let down by the miserable weather on
Tuesday morning, but as the sun began to shine by midday thousands more started entering the site.
“There were good main ring attractions offer
ing something of interest to all ages and all tastes. Rural arts and crafts were in abundance and the trade stands did us proud. “A lot has been learnt from last year’s event,
JOEL Blackledge (two) with his father Lindsey and the soft toy that Joel won (A270604/la)
but there are still improvements to be made for next year’s Royal Lancashire Show - and there is no reason whatsoever why it shouldn’t return to the Ribble Valley.” Mr Pinder expressed his thanks to the police
for the excellent traffic arrangements, which ensured no repeat of last year’s chaotic scenes, and he also thanked this year’s president, Mr Tom Bowring, show directors Andrew and John Thompson, as well as assistant show directors Richard Mortimer, Damian Pinder, Barry Wor thington and David Hutton, for all their help. Having spent 11 months to combat the traffic
jams of 2003 and heavy downpours, which led to a mud-bath on the scenic showground, Insp. Bob
Ford of Clitheroe police, said: “We have had three excellent days. “There have been no problems with congestions
on or off the site. The traffic has flowed freely while the show itself has gone very well with beautiful weather.
“Two people who were thought to be suffering
from chest problems were taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary by ambulance on the final day,- but apart from that, there were no other acci dents or casualties reported. “We did, however, have a variety of missing

people reported, ranging from three-and-a-half to 80-year-olds - all of course were later found enjoying the bright sunshine, refreshments and rural attractions on show!” There was praise aplenty for Ribble Valley Bor
ough Council whose input was plain to see - and easy to find. Alongside the Lancashire Strategic Partnership, the borough encouraged visitors to try their hand at a myriad of countryside activi ties - including making coracles! Downham blacksmith Steve Marshall’s huge

quee, while scores of children tried their hand at making masks and bird boxes in the summer sun. Inside, adults took advantage of free blood pres sure checks. The disability sports officer encour aged children to "beat the goalie" on Tuesday and Ribble Valley's Mayor, Coun. Charles Warkman, and his Mayoress, Ruth, hoasted a special recep tion on Wednesday evening. Elsewhere on the site there were interesting pursuits galore aimed at youngsters. A punch and judy show ensured that dozens of children were sitting cross-legged well in advance of each per formance, donkeys from the acclaimed Devon donkey sanctuary run by Elizabeth Svendsen attracted lots of admirers, while the chance to have a picture taken with a beautiful owl saw
youngsters - and more than a few adults - queue ing at times. Grindleton resident Martin James must have
been delighted by the interest in the angling sec tion of the show. A huge marquee fronted the riverbank with displays and demonstrations throughout the three days.
One man and his dog may have required a par
ticularly large section of the show site, but for those who sat and watched, the sight of farmers manoeuvring their sheepdogs around a flock of sheep and guiding them around gates and into a pen was quite mesmerising.
Numerous local people enjoyed success at the
show, with Betty Parker, Newsholme, gaining a win in the Jacob s Section class for ewes.
