Disappointing tennis defeat

CLITHEROE Tennis Club’s mixed doubles A team started their league campaign with a disap pointing 6-2 defeat at the

hands of Whalley. Despite getting an occa

sional toehold in the match, Clitheroe rarely threatened to upset the home team’s domination. Louise Burrill and Phil

Mileham could not find any degree of consistency, losing their first set 6-0, but toned things around to claim the second 6-2. Their demons came back

to haunt them in their sec ond rubber, as they man aged just three games in the

THE Lawrenson Cup doubles com-

petition was held at Whalley Bowling Club last Saturday. And, surprisingly, both

of last year’s finalists fell in this year’s quarter finals. Holders Stuart Gall

and Glynn Dodd went down to homesters George Radivojevic and Frank Corban, while Doug Anderton and Jacky Mason were defeated by eventual winners John Eborall and David Bond. In a rather one-sided

final, Eborall and Bond eased into 9-1 lead, which they extended to 15-3. . Playing on their own

green, Radivojevic and Corban rallied briefly to reduce the deficit to 8- 15, but were unable to make home advantage count as Eborall and Bond secured the trophy

with a 21-11 victory. RESULTS

Quarter-Finals: John Eborall and David Bond (Heys Inn) 21; Doug Anderton and Jacky Mason (Gatty Park) 15; Mick Burns and Brian Yerkess (Free Garden ers) 21; G. Hindle and M. two sets. Mary Brass and Mick

Dewhurst fared little better, despite having set points to level their first match, which they eventually lost 4-6,5-7. They composed them

selves to win the first set of their next match, but inex plicably, Brass’ serve started to crumble as they lost then- way and the set. The bubble has also burst

for the open league A team. After their unbeaten start to the season, they suffered a 4- 0 drubbing against Crow Wood A. In the opening match,

Derek Parrott and Phil Mileham battled uncon vincingly against quality opponents and lost in two sets, while debutants Mark Hanson and Peter Hitchen also struggled to stem the flow of winners which threatened to overwhelm them. In the return rubbers,

Parrott and Mileham had their chances in a marathon match, but after more than two hours, they eventually succumbed 5-7,6-4,7-5.

LAST weekend saw mixed fortunes for Whalley Ten nis Club. The A side narrowly lost

3-2 to Crosshill A. Richard Lambert and

Henry Farrar won both of their games, while Danny Roff and Mathew Cuynes both played well and were unlucky to lose. Crosshill won a couple more games than Whalley, and so took the extra point. Meanwhile, the B team

enjoyed a match of chang ing fortunes against Sun- nyhurst B. Both Whalley pairings

began by losing the first set, but then managed to turn things around. Gordon Pimperton and

Guy Purves, and Martin Haworth and Andrew Cuynes went on to take all four rubbers by winning their remaining sets com fortably. The C team also won

against Parkwood B by the virtue of having won one more game, with the match tied at two rubbers all.

Hanson and Hitchen put

up some stem resistance in their return rubber, but few teams will have much suc cess this season against one

of the league’s title favourites. The B team enjoyed

greater success against league newcomers Crosshills B.

Peter Bell and Neil Gunn

had a relatively unimpeded 6-1, 6-4 win over younger opponents, who were guilty of double-faulting liberally. And their second match

was an even more emphatic 6-

1,6-0 victory.

John Calvert and Steve Higson recorded the identi cal score against the same opponents, but were hard pressed against the first pair. Having lost the first set 6-2, they took the second 7-5. The eagerly awaited

deciding set was conceded by the Crosshilis pair to con firm a comfortable victory for Clitheroe. The junior A team’s fix

ture was called off due to waterlogged courts in Dar- wen, while the B team were comfortably defeated by Burnley A, but not before playing some top quality tennis. Mark Higson and Jen

nifer Holgate could not quite hold on in their first match despite taking a 5-3 lead, eventually going down 7-

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, May 13th, 2004 27 a celebration of learning

Adult Learners Week awards

ADVERTISING FEATURE Advertising co-ordinated by V IC KY BARKER

ADULT Learners’ Week next week is the time to celebrate some of the hundreds of people whose passion for learning has seen them blossom

with new confidence and skills. The Adult Learners’ Week. Awards

2004, run by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, will be made across England at a host of region al ceremonies. More than 100 people will be recognised for their dedication to learning - learning which reaps benefits

not only for themselves, but for their families and the wider community. Mr Gordon Purs-

glove, head of Euro pean Social Fund (ESF) Division in the Department for Work and Pensions, said: “I am delighted that this is the 13 th year European Social Fund money will be used to support Adult Learners’ Week. I would like to congratulate all win ners, particularly those receiving ESF awards.” At least five win

ners have been cho sen in each region including the follow

ing: ® Mum-of-four

6, 6-4, while primary

schoolboys Jack Dewhurst and Richard Bell put up a gallant fight against their older opponents before they too lost out in their two sets. Neither pairing enjoyed

any more luck in the return rubbers, as their stronger, more experienced oppo nents made their class tell on their way to victory.

Whalley’s mixed fortunes Roger Walker and

Robert Houseman rolled back the years with a marathon three setter last

ing over two hours. Oxygen rather than bar

ley water would have been more appropriate at the changeover, and they lost

their second match. Fortunately, James

Burke and Tom Ormerod were on hand to win their second match in straight

S6tS. The mixed team of

Richard Lambert and Cathy Green, Henry Far rar and Nickie Hopwood were victorious in the derby clash with Clitheroe,

winning 3-1. Possibly the best perfor

mance of the week came from the Whalley Juniors,

who had a convincing vic tory over Towneley B by

an 8-0 scoreline. William Maher and

Amy Walsh, Charlotte Haworth and Nicola Maher were all on top form, and showed consider able promise for the future.
