Band’s CD a winner for lucky couple
OUR Slaidburn Silver Band competition proved popular with readers, a t t ra c t in g more than 70 entries. The lucky winners were Mrs
Joan Frankland, of Gisburn, and Mrs Barbara Waller, of Langho, who each win a copy of the band’s first CD, “Slaidburn Festival”. They answered correctly that
the composer of the famous brass band march, “Slaidburn”, was William Rimmer. He wrote the piece at the

PUPILS who will attend St Augustine’s RC High School from September were wel comed at a special Mass held at the Billing- ton school.

Wrecking spree after drink bout
TWO Clitheroe teenagers went on a
drunken wrecking spree after a night out. Blackburn magistrates heard how
Jason Paul Green and David Michael Roberts caused more than £900 worth of damage.
Green (18), of Radeclyffe Street,
pleaded guilty to damaging a wing mirror on a car belonging to Norman Turner and one belonging to Janet Gallagher. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £108 compensation and £55 costs. Roberts (19), of Standen Road,
pleaded guilty to damaging a car light cluster belonging to Justine Collins and causing £788 worth of damage to a shop window at Clitheroe Car Compo nents. He was given a conditional dis charge for 12 months and ordered to pay £859 compensation and £55 costs. Mrs Wendy Chappell (prosecuting)
said that a man making his way home at about. 10-30 p.m. saw the two teenagers standing at the junction of Fort Street and Woone Lane and then heard a loud bang.
The two ran off and the witness fol
lowed as he rang the police. He saw one of them kick out a t a car and then
heard another loud bang as they again ran off. Green told the court he was very
sorry and said his actions had been stupid.
Roberts also apologised and said that he had drunk too much.
Access all information THE Ribble Valley Access Group works to
promote equality of access to information and opportunities for all people who live work and visit the Ribble Valley. Access is not just about wheelchair users,
but concerns mums with prams, blind and partially-sighted people, and the hearing impaired. The Access Group meets to dis cuss access issues and produce agendas for action. This may mean lobbying local busi nesses, the borough and county councils and other statutory bodies. The group is made up of a variety of
organisations and individuals including Ribble Valley Borough Council and Lan cashire County Council, Age Concern, Trinity Community Partnership, East Lancashire Advocacy and Ribble Valley MS Society. unannounced appearance at the village band practise could be considerd akin to David Beck ham turning up at a Clitheroe Wolves coaching session! “Slaidburn" is the first track
on the new CD, which also fea tures some 14 more of the band’s favourites, including “Lassie from Lancashire" “Twelfth Street Rag”, “When I ’m 64”, “Peel’s Patrol”, “Chopin’s Dream” and “Themes of 007”. The CD sells for £8 and can

Sneak thief at grammar school
POLICE are hunting a thief who sneaked into the staff room at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School sixth-form centre while the staff were teaching and stole a purse. The offender described as a
white male, about 5ft. 8in. tall, with a pale complexion, pre
tended to be a prospective pupil. When asked to wait in the staff room, he stole a purse contain ing £100. If anyone witnessed the inci

Super, smashing show by Vivien Meath
THE sun came out for the first Ribble Valley Motorshow as hundreds of enthu siasts descended on Mitton Hall, just outside Whalley. Only a few miles away, rain put a dampener
on many of Sunday's events. Fortunately, it failed to reach Mitton as motor dealers from all over East Lancashire displayed a variety of vehicles on the forecourt of this country house hotel. Comedian Jim Bowen arrived in style to
declare the show open. His chauffeur-driven Mercedes with his distinctive number plate attracted much attention, while the former teacher mingled with visitors and organisers, prior to another engagement in the Midlands. Inside the hotel there were retail stands
galore, including outdoor clothing, designer ladies' wear, wine tasting, gifts and goodies for children, healthy pet foods, barbecues and information on properties abroad. In the grounds, there was a chance to take a look at outdoor jacuzzi-style tubs, while children took full advantage of the hotel's play facili ties. The show, organised in conjunction with
the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times and the Valley magazine, coincided with Father's Day and scores of visitors took the opportunity to dine out. A free park and ride service operating from
Whalley's business park at The Sidings helped to relieve some of the traffic congestion, but with a medieval weekend at the Aspinall Arms, just a hundred yards away, there was an inevitable occasional build-up of traffic as many of the visitors took in both venues.
