WIN! Grand

Cinema tickets HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (PG); The Grand Cinema; from tomorrow

HARRY POTTER fans have been queuing the length of York Street to catch the boy wizard’s latest adven ture at Clitheroe’s Grand Cinema. J.K. Rowling’s books have cap

tured the hearts and minds of mil lions of young (and not so young) readers, who seem to agree that the film adaptations to date have more than done the novels justice. Harry’s latest adventure begins as

he returns for his third year at Hog- warts School of Witchcraft and Wiz ardry. There he learns that evil Sirius

Black, played by Gary Oldman, has escaped from Azkaban prison and his life is in danger. With the help of his friend’s, Ron

and Hermione, Harry must delve into mystery that surrounds Black’s imprisonment. All three know it had something to

do with the death of Harry’s parents and now Black may be after Harry too. This third film has a darker, more

foreboding air than the first two and gives the now-teenage Harry a more feisty attitude.

Church will host concert

A CONCERT at St Wilfrid’s Church, Ribchester, is one of the early highlights of Lancashire Sinfonietta’s new season of musi cal treats. Internationally-renowned per

formers and directors will join the stars of the future for a series of exciting performances over the coming year. The Sinfonietta, now in its

ninth season, brings together talented Lancastrians from across the UK, to showcase the achievements and talents of some of Lancashire's finest musi cians.

MAJOR BARBARA; The Royal Exchange, Manch ester; until June 19th

.............................. Mobile no......................... :

GEORGE BERNARD SHAW is good value for money. You get a large cast and a lot of words. It is clear why Greg Hersov has

chosen to revive “Major Barbara”. The conflict between religion and the arms trade, whether to save people’s souls or their bodies by eliminating poverty, is patently obvious in our war-tom, material istic world.

The Ribchester concert is

planned for 2-30 p.m. on Satur day, June 26th, as part of the Ribchester Festival of Music. Guest director Harvey De

Souza will lead the performers through a varied programme including “Danses sacree et pro fane”, “Syrinx” and “Trio for flute, harp and viola”, all by Debussy. You can also hear Mozart’s “Clarinet Quintet in A Major K581” and Ravel’s “Introduction and Allegro”. Ticket prices range from £6 to

£15 and are available from the box office on 01254 878881 or on

the door. The full list of perfor mances is: Fleetwood, Marine Hall, June 18th; Preston, Minster Church, June 19th; Ribchester, St Wilfrid's Church, June 26th; Morecambe, The Platform! September 10th; Preston, Min ster Church, September; Leyland, St Andrew's Church, December 3rd; Lancaster, The Priory, December 4th; Lancaster, Great Hall, March 3rd (2005); Burnley, St Peter's Church, March 4th; Preston, St George's Church, March 18th.

For further information contact the box office on 01772 531794.

First-class cast for this major production The excellent cast is headed by

David Horovitch as tycoon arms manufacturer Andrew Undershaft and Emma Cunliffe as his daugh ter, Barbara, seeking a life’s pur pose in the Salvation Army. Laura Cox makes a splendid Lasy Brito- mart, ably supported by Sam Crane as her ineffectual son. Kate Layden, Jack Lord, John

Conroy and Francis Magee, intriguingly listed as “East Enders”, play “mockney” charac ters to the hilt. Michael Colgan gives a thoughtful performance as

Cusins, professor of Greek, seduced into sordid but profitable com-1 merce. Too often Shaw’s characters are I

just mouthpieces for debate. By the final act I was irritated that I had got the message some time before. I saw a Shakespeare play two days later and was gripped till the very end by amazingly com plex characters and ideas that con-1 tinue to intrigue. Sorry G.B.S.! But don’t let that stop you see-1

ing “Major Barbara”. PIPPAMUNRO I
